In its early days, Netflix was not just focused on creating a library of flashy originals; it also excelled at acquiring films that other studios had quietly abandoned. This underdog strategy is once again paying off nearly a decade later, as one of those rescued films finds itself back in the limelight.

That film is ‘Spectral,’ a military science-fiction thriller that is currently attracting fresh interest on Netflix almost ten years after its initial release. The movie combines war-zone action with hard science-fiction elements, demonstrating that a compelling premise can still resonate with audiences long after its debut.

‘Spectral’ centers on Mark Clyne, a DARPA engineer portrayed by James Badge Dale, who is dispatched to an active war zone to investigate strange phenomena detected by the hyperspectral goggles he developed. Teaming up with an elite special forces unit, he confronts mysterious, seemingly indestructible apparitions, transforming what initially appears to be a ghost story into something more scientifically grounded and significantly more perilous.

The journey of ‘Spectral’ to Netflix was not the original plan. As reported by Collider, the film was initially slated for a theatrical release through Legendary and Universal, with a substantial budget of around $70 million, before Universal ultimately decided to withdraw it from the planned theatrical run. Netflix stepped in to acquire the distribution rights, releasing the film globally in December 2016.

This decision has quietly paid dividends over the years. Although Netflix has never disclosed viewership numbers for the film, as is common for its titles, ‘Spectral’ has maintained a solid 78% score on Rotten Tomatoes and has remained available on the platform for nearly a decade, a remarkable achievement for a licensed acquisition rather than a marquee original.

Critics at the time of release praised the film for its commitment to scientific explanations rather than relying solely on supernatural mystery, setting it apart from typical genre offerings. One review highlighted its dedication to “rhapsodizing about science” while still delivering the tension and action sequences expected from a war-themed thriller. Another called it “a cracking sci-fi military mystery that draws from various genres yet never feels overly familiar,” commending both its ensemble cast and its blockbuster-level visual effects.

Not every response to the film was positive upon its release, and ‘Spectral’ has always had a somewhat mixed reputation among genre enthusiasts, with some viewers finding its technical dialogue too dense or its central conflict underdeveloped. However, this divisiveness has not hindered the film from cultivating a loyal fanbase over the years, as fans of hidden streaming gems continue to recommend it as an underrated choice.

A key factor in keeping ‘Spectral’ relevant is its unique approach to blending genres. The film draws elements from war movies, alien invasion thrillers, and hard science fiction, creating a narrative centered around apparitions that ultimately have a scientific basis rather than a purely supernatural one, giving the story a grounded quality that distinguishes it from standard genre entries.

With the film now enjoying a renewed wave of discovery nearly ten years after it first streamed, ‘Spectral’ is proving that Netflix’s early instinct to rescue this project from Universal’s shelf was indeed the right decision.
