Fan casting has become a beloved pastime for superhero movie fans, and few actresses have stirred as much excitement as Sydney Sweeney. From Black Canary to Power Girl, fan-created concept art featuring Sweeney in various DC roles has gone viral over the past year, fueling ongoing discussions about which iconic hero she might be ideal for.

This week, the speculation reached new heights, and it didn’t even require digital artwork. Sweeney posted a series of photos on Instagram from what she called “camp ’26,” showcasing a real-life costume of herself as Wonder Woman, complete with a red-and-gold headband, matching bustier, and star-spangled bottoms, alongside a friend dressed as Superman.

This photo appeared at a particularly opportune time, as fans had already spent months envisioning Sweeney in the role through fan art. Back in September, DeviantArt user Minsc93 created concept art depicting Sweeney in Gal Gadot’s classic Wonder Woman armor but with darker hair, aligning with expectations for DC Studios’ rebooted version of Diana Prince, following updates on the character’s development from DC leadership.

This earlier fan art was not an isolated incident. Sweeney’s name has frequently appeared in other DC fan-casting discussions, with artists envisioning her as Black Canary in a leather jacket and fishnets, as Power Girl with her signature platinum bob and revealing costume, and now, with a real-world costume photo as Wonder Woman.

Part of the ongoing speculation stems from Sweeney’s brief encounter with superhero material. She portrayed Julia Cornwall, a future version of Spider-Woman, in 2024’s poorly received “Madame Web,” where she only briefly gained powers through flash-forward visions rather than a full heroic arc. Despite the film’s negative reception, her involvement has not diminished her momentum, and fans continue to see her as a prime candidate for a more significant comic book role.

DC’s actual Wonder Woman reboot is actively in development, with the screenplay currently being written and expected to enter production once finalized. No casting decisions have been publicly confirmed for Diana Prince in the rebooted DC Universe, leaving the role open to fan speculation for now.

Other names have been mentioned in the same conversation, including Alexandra Daddario and Ana de Armas, both of whom fans argue fit the traditional comic book image of the character. Sweeney’s supporters, however, highlight her versatility across comedic and dramatic roles as evidence that she could bring fresh energy to a character that has historically balanced strength, humor, and emotional depth.

Adding another layer to the online discussion, Sweeney’s “Anyone But You” co-star Glen Powell has previously expressed interest in potentially joining the DCU as Batman, a detail fans have noted as evidence of their appealing on-screen chemistry that could extend into a shared superhero franchise down the line, although nothing concrete has been confirmed.

For now, Sweeney’s Halloween-themed costume photo remains just that—a fun personal post without any official casting confirmation. Still, given how frequently her name arises in DC fan campaigns, this latest image has been enough to reignite speculation once again.
