Anthony Mackie’s & Morena Baccarin’s ‘Elevation’ Now Streaming on Hulu
Not every film receives the recognition it deserves in theaters, but many find a second chance when streaming audiences discover them. This is the case for one of Anthony Mackie’s lesser-known projects from recent years.
The film in focus is ‘Elevation,’ a post-apocalyptic action thriller that initially went unnoticed at the box office but has since garnered a loyal following through word-of-mouth and streaming buzz. Directed by George Nolfi and featuring Morena Baccarin, the movie has quietly attracted new fans over the past two years on various platforms.
Now, it’s Hulu’s turn to showcase ‘Elevation,’ which officially began streaming today. This gives a fresh wave of subscribers the opportunity to experience a film that critics largely overlooked, yet audiences have continued to support.
Set three years after mysterious creatures known as Reapers have decimated approximately 95 percent of the world’s population, survivors are forced to seek refuge in mountain communities above 8,000 feet, the only altitude safe from the predators.
Mackie stars as Will, a single father living in a refuge community with his son, who suffers from a lung disease requiring medication found only below “The Line,” the perilous altitude threshold separating safety from the Reapers. In a desperate bid to save his son, Will must venture back down into the treacherous lowlands.
He is not alone on this journey. Baccarin portrays Nina, a scientist who has dedicated years to studying the Reapers and searching for a means to defeat them, while Maddie Hasson plays Katie, completing the trio that descends below the elevation line together. Initially distrustful of Nina, Will may find that her research is crucial for their survival.

‘Elevation’ had a rocky start, earning only 3.6 million dollars domestically against an 18 million dollar production budget after its theatrical release on November 8, 2024, marking it as one of the more notable flops of Mackie’s career.
However, the film’s fortunes changed dramatically once it transitioned to streaming. ‘Elevation’ first gained traction on Max in February 2025, then continued to build momentum with a resurgence on HBO Max, largely driven by curious subscribers who recognized Mackie and decided to give the sci-fi thriller a chance.
This pattern of quiet success has repeated across multiple platforms, including a stint on Amazon Prime Video, indicating that the film’s appeal was never solely reliant on theatrical marketing. Often compared to ‘A Quiet Place’ for its tense, creature-driven survival premise, ‘Elevation’ seems to have thrived on the kind of low-pressure discovery that streaming facilitates.
Behind the scenes, the film brought Mackie back together with director George Nolfi, who previously collaborated with him on the 2020 drama ‘The Banker.’ The screenplay was penned by Kenny Ryan and Jacob Roman, with production partially led by Brad Fuller, known for ‘A Quiet Place’ and ‘The Purge,’ aligning with the tense, predator-driven tone ‘Elevation’ maintains throughout.
The supporting cast includes Shauna Earp, Rachel Nicks, and Danny Boyd Jr., rounding out the small, tightly-knit ensemble that comprises the film’s survivor community. With a concise 92-minute runtime, ‘Elevation’ feels more like a tense, character-driven survival tale than a sprawling creature feature, likely contributing to its slow-burn popularity on streaming.
Its debut on Hulu coincides with Mackie’s rising profile, thanks to his ongoing role as the new lead in the Captain America franchise within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For viewers who missed ‘Elevation’ during its brief theatrical run or its earlier streaming appearances, Hulu now provides another opportunity to discover what all the sleeper-hit buzz is about.
