Jason Statham’s ‘Mutiny’ Rotten Tomatoes Score Continues to Rise After Debut
Action star Jason Statham has built a successful career on a tried-and-true formula: gritty revenge narratives, intense fight choreography, and just enough charisma to keep audiences engaged, even when critics are not entirely favorable. His latest film follows this pattern, albeit with a rocky start.
The film in question is ‘Mutiny,’ an R-rated revenge thriller that premiered in U.S. theaters on August 21. Directed by Jean-François Richet, the movie centers on Cole Reed, a man wrongfully accused of murdering his billionaire boss. He embarks on a mission aboard a cargo ship for vengeance, only to stumble upon an international conspiracy.
The initial critical reception was shaky, with ‘Mutiny’ landing a Rotten Tomatoes score of around 44 percent based on a limited number of reviews. However, as more critics weighed in, that score has climbed to 51 percent, though it has fluctuated enough throughout the week to leave the film’s overall reputation somewhat uncertain.
This instability places ‘Mutiny’ among Statham’s more polarizing recent releases, yet it is far from his lowest-rated project. That title still belongs to 2007’s ‘In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale,’ which holds a dismal 4 percent on the Tomatometer, a benchmark that ‘Mutiny’ surpasses comfortably.

Statham’s filmography has consistently followed a familiar critical pattern, and ‘Mutiny’ fits neatly within that framework. His highest-rated film remains 2015’s ‘Spy,’ which boasts an impressive 94 percent on the Tomatometer and a 78 percent audience score, demonstrating that Statham can win over critics when the material diverges from his typical action roles.
Recent films have shown a similar mixed reception. ‘The Beekeeper’ scored 71 percent with critics in 2024, while ‘A Working Man’ received a 46 percent rating the following year. This year’s earlier release, ‘Shelter,’ came in at 64 percent. In this context, ‘Mutiny’s’ fluctuating score places it toward the lower end of Statham’s recent output, even as it continues to rise.
Critics have expressed divided opinions on the film’s strengths. Some reviewers have lauded its straightforward approach to action, with one noting that the fight choreography is “coherently choreographed in tactile surroundings.” Others, however, have criticized the predictability of the story and the lack of depth in Statham’s character.
Despite the uneven critical reception, industry observers have pointed out that Statham’s films often outperform their Tomatometer scores in terms of audience reaction. This trend has persisted for years, with films like ‘Wrath of Man’ earning a 68 percent critics’ score alongside a much stronger 90 percent audience score, and ‘The Beekeeper’ garnering a 92 percent audience approval despite its more modest critical reception.
This pattern seems to be repeating with ‘Mutiny’ as well. While an official Popcornmeter score was not available at the time critics’ reviews began to surface, early verified audience reactions have been notably positive, reinforcing the notion that Statham’s fanbase tends to enjoy his films regardless of critical feedback.
The film features a supporting cast that includes Annabelle Wallis, Roland Møller, and Adrian Lester, with Wallis receiving particular praise from some critics as a standout in the film, even amid mixed reviews. With a runtime of 95 minutes and an R rating for language and bloody violence, ‘Mutiny’ delivers precisely the kind of stripped-down action experience that longtime Statham fans have come to expect.
As the Tomatometer continues to fluctuate in the days following its release, it’s evident that ‘Mutiny’ has settled into that familiar territory many of Statham’s films occupy: divisive among critics but embraced by the audiences who appreciate his signature style.
