Streaming success stories are rarely straightforward these days. What defines a “hit” varies significantly depending on the metrics used, and few shows exemplify this better than Marvel’s flagship Disney+ series this year.

‘Daredevil: Born Again‘ has navigated a complex landscape in 2026, embodying two contrasting narratives. On one side, it’s a critically acclaimed continuation of one of Marvel’s most cherished characters. Conversely, it has consistently struggled to convert that acclaim into the viewership numbers Disney+ requires from its premier franchise.

This week, new data highlighted that ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Season 2 was the most-streamed Disney+ original television season in the U.S. for the first half of 2026, according to Luminate. The series amassed 2.3 billion minutes watched from January to June, surpassing all other original shows on the platform during that period.

This total outperformed ‘Wonder Man’ at 1.9 billion minutes, ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ Season 2 at 1.8 billion, ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Season 1 at 1.3 billion, and ‘Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord’ at 1.1 billion. On paper, this ranking positions ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ as Disney+’s biggest original success story of the year thus far.

However, the broader context paints a different picture. Despite leading Disney+’s internal charts, ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ has never appeared on Nielsen’s separate streaming originals rankings across either of its two seasons, going 0-for-17 on that chart throughout its run.

To illustrate just how far behind the show is, Nielsen’s mid-year report lists ‘Stranger Things’ at 23.2 billion minutes, ‘The Pitt’ at 21.1 billion, ‘Landman’ at 12.4 billion, ‘The Boys’ at 9.6 billion, and ‘Fallout’ at 8.0 billion as the top streaming originals for the first half of 2026. Even Hulu’s ‘Paradise’ and Netflix’s ‘One Piece’ each garnered 5.7 billion minutes, more than double what ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ achieved on its own platform.

Disney+ does not have a single original series featured in Nielsen’s Top 20 list. To put this gap into perspective, the platform’s best-performing show over the same six-month period would need to more than double its total minutes just to break into 15th place on that broader chart.

In addition to the platform-wide comparisons, ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ has also faced challenges in retaining its audience from season to season. Across the first five episodes of each season, Season 2 experienced a viewership decline of approximately 46 percent and a total watch time drop of 54 percent compared to Season 1, despite the second season receiving better overall reviews.

Season 1 attracted 1.9 million viewers when it premiered on Disney+ in March 2024, marking the character’s first live-action appearance since the beloved Netflix series concluded in 2018. The significant drop in Season 2 suggests that initial nostalgia-driven interest may not have translated into sustained long-term engagement for the franchise.

Marvel is moving forward nonetheless, with Season 3 already in production as part of the studio’s broader Phase 6 slate, reportedly gearing up for a full Defenders team-up featuring Charlie Cox’s Daredevil alongside other returning heroes. Whether this ensemble strategy will be sufficient to bridge the gap between Disney+’s internal rankings and the platform’s performance against external competitors remains to be seen.

Currently, ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ holds a unique position: it is the undisputed leader of its own platform while still struggling to be recognized as a true hit by the industry’s broader streaming standards.
