‘Formula 1: Drive to Survive’ Season 9 Confirmed by Netflix with New Insights
Few sports documentaries have transformed their subject quite like ‘Formula 1: Drive to Survive.’ Since its debut in 2019, the Netflix series has turned pit-lane politics and paddock gossip into essential viewing, significantly boosting American interest in a sport that previously struggled to gain traction in the U.S.
This growth has not been without its challenges. The show has faced criticism over the years for its tendency to emphasize manufactured drama, and after Season 8 was released in conjunction with Apple TV+ in February, fans were left questioning whether the series would continue.
Now, there is clarity. Netflix has officially announced that ‘Formula 1: Drive to Survive’ will return for a ninth season, with new episodes set to explore the tumultuous 2026 championship when they premiere in 2027.
This renewal puts an end to months of speculation and is part of a broader announcement of season renewals from Netflix’s UK content team, which includes returning shows like ‘Being Gordon Ramsay.’ Executive producers James Gay-Rees and Paul Martin, who have been with the series since its inception, will continue to lead the project.

“We’re thrilled to be producing Season 9 of this iconic show,” the duo stated in a message shared with Televisual. They noted that this year’s episodes will delve deeper into “the hidden spaces of this fantastic sport” than ever before.
This promise comes at a pivotal time for the series. Season 9 will cover a 2026 grid marked by significant regulation changes to both chassis and power units, alongside a title race that has already produced one of the sport’s most intriguing young narratives: Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli has become the youngest championship leader in F1 history, with Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, his teammate George Russell, and reigning champion Lando Norris of McLaren all in pursuit.
There’s also no shortage of off-track drama for the producers to explore. Christian Horner’s departure from Red Bull last year means Season 9 will be the first without one of the show’s most consistently dramatic figures, while Max Verstappen’s future has also been settled as the new season approaches. The entry of new manufacturers Ford, Audi, and Cadillac adds another layer for the docuseries to investigate.
However, a specific release date is still pending. Netflix has not confirmed an exact premiere, but historical patterns suggest a likely timeframe: Season 7 premiered on March 7, 2025, and Season 8 followed on February 27, 2026, both arriving about a week before their respective season-opening Grand Prix. If this trend continues, expect Season 9 to debut in late February or early March 2027, once F1 finalizes its calendar.
Not all corners of Netflix’s motorsport universe are celebrating, however. The all-female spinoff ‘F1: The Academy’ seems to be sitting this one out, with no signs of renewal alongside its flagship series.
Fan reactions to the Season 9 announcement have already begun to surface on social media, with many viewers eager to see how the show will address storylines like the Aston Martin lineup and the evolving power dynamics within the grid. Despite ongoing complaints from some longtime “hardcore” fans about the show’s dramatized editing, it’s evident that the demand for more ‘Drive to Survive’ remains strong after eight seasons.
For now, fans will have to watch the rest of the 2026 season unfold in real time, knowing that Netflix cameras are already capturing the action behind the scenes.
