Kit Harington Takes Over as Gilderoy Lockhart in HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Series
HBO’s ‘Harry Potter‘ series has become a highly anticipated production, with each casting announcement treated like a significant event by fans who cherish the books. From Dominic McLaughlin’s portrayal of Harry to John Lithgow’s Dumbledore, the show has embraced a mix of emerging talents and established actors.
The scrutiny intensifies whenever a role is recast, and Season 2 has already seen its second significant change before filming has even begun. The show is adapting ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,’ which features a notably vain and attention-grabbing character.
That character is Gilderoy Lockhart, and the actor stepping into the role has officially changed. Deadline exclusively reported that Kit Harington will now portray the fraudulent Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, replacing Nicholas Hoult, who exited due to scheduling conflicts.
Hoult was announced for the role on August 11, making this swift recasting happen in under two weeks. Reports indicate that HBO had initially scheduled around two of Hoult’s other projects, but when Lockhart’s filming dates changed, the studio had to release him from his commitment.
Hoult’s busy schedule is well-known among his followers. He is currently filming ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ James Gunn’s Superman sequel, where he reprises his role as Lex Luthor, and he has ‘How to Rob a Bank’ set for release in November, leaving little time for a new television commitment.
Harington’s casting isn’t entirely unexpected. He has already delved into Lockhart’s character, having voiced him for Audible’s full-cast ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’ audiobook, released late last year.
Reflecting on his decision to voice the role, Harington expressed that it was an easy choice because of his love for the character. He noted that few cameos in a series are as enjoyable for an actor as Gilderoy Lockhart, calling it a no-brainer, as he shared with Variety. He also described himself as a devoted ‘Harry Potter’ fan who has cherished the books since childhood.
The role itself is filled with mischief. Lockhart is introduced in ‘Chamber of Secrets’ as a celebrated wizard and author known for his supposed heroic deeds, only to be revealed as a fraud who takes credit for others’ accomplishments and erases their memories to hide his deceit. Kenneth Branagh originally portrayed the character in the 2002 film adaptation of ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.’
This marks another collaboration for Harington with HBO. In addition to his iconic role as Jon Snow in ‘Game of Thrones,’ he starred in the miniseries ‘Gunpowder’ and has been part of the cast in the network’s ‘Industry’ in recent seasons, making ‘Harry Potter’ his third major series for HBO.
Season 2 is set to begin filming this fall, continuing the narrative after Season 1, officially titled ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,’ premieres on HBO and HBO Max on December 25. The ensemble cast already includes Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, and Nick Frost as Hagrid.
With one major recasting already in the books before filming for Season 2 even starts, fans will be eagerly watching to see if Harington’s interpretation of Lockhart meets expectations or if the change ignites further discussion once production begins.
