Real-life friendships often struggle to translate onto the screen, but occasionally a project intentionally blurs that line. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have cultivated one of Hollywood’s most enduring off-screen relationships, a bond that has been highlighted through numerous film and television collaborations over the years.

Their friendship first captured audience attention during the inaugural season of ‘True Detective,’ where they portrayed rival Louisiana detectives with a palpable chemistry from the very first episode. Since then, fans have eagerly anticipated a reunion for another memorable project, with rumors swirling about a new collaboration for years.

Now, that long-awaited reunion has a release date and a captivating first look. Apple TV has announced that ‘Brothers,’ its new eight-episode comedy featuring McConaughey and Harrelson as fictionalized versions of themselves, will debut globally on September 23, with the first two episodes available at launch, followed by a new episode every Wednesday until November 4.

The storyline directly taps into the actors’ genuine friendship, centering on their characters as a lifelong bond is thrown into turmoil when they uncover a long-hidden secret suggesting they may actually be brothers. After Woody’s daughter’s wedding goes awry, he takes his family to Austin for an extended visit at Matthew’s ranch, where Matthew’s mother, Ma Mac, portrayed by Holland Taylor, inadvertently reveals the buried family secret.

As Woody turns the ranch upside down in search of the truth, Matthew grapples with his own identity crisis: a potential run for Governor of Texas. The series promises to deliver a heartfelt, chaotic, and hilariously funny narrative about friendship, family, fame, and the blurred lines between myth and reality.

The show draws inspiration from real-life rumors that have surrounded McConaughey and Harrelson for years. In 2023, Harrelson mentioned that he and McConaughey hadn’t taken a DNA test, but the similarities between them were too striking to overlook, describing McConaughey’s actions and words as feeling deeply familiar, according to comments he made to Esquire. This real-world speculation serves as the emotional foundation for the fictionalized series.

Bringing ‘Brothers’ to fruition was not without its challenges. The series was initially announced in 2023, but original showrunner David West Read left the project in 2025 due to creative differences after production had already been halted and the cast sent home. Lee Eisenberg, the Peabody-winning creator of ‘Jury Duty,’ later took over as showrunner and executive producer.

The ensemble cast alongside McConaughey and Harrelson includes Natalie Martinez, Brittany Ishibashi, Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton, Noah Carganilla, Highdee Kuan, and Oona Yaffe, who portray the two families whose lives intertwine once the secret is revealed. Trent O’Donnell, known for his work on ‘The Good Place,’ directed the pilot and several additional episodes.

‘Brothers’ adds yet another chapter to McConaughey and Harrelson’s long history of on-screen collaborations, which includes projects like 1999’s ‘EDtv’ and 2008’s ‘Surfer, Dude,’ in addition to ‘True Detective.’ Both actors have also been busy this year, with Harrelson starring in the Cannes-premiered French film ‘Full Phil’ and McConaughey taking the lead in ‘The Rivals of Amziah King.’

With a premise inspired by tabloid speculation and two actors whose authentic chemistry shines without the need for a script, ‘Brothers’ is set to be one of the more unique comedy releases of the upcoming fall season.
