Anime films have officially entered a new era of box office ambition, and the fandom’s response continues to arrive faster than anyone anticipated. Just months after ‘Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle‘ shattered records for anime cinema, the genre’s biggest franchises are racing to follow that same canon-adaptation strategy, and audiences are showing up in impressive numbers.

This shift became undeniable this past weekend when Toei Animation made a historic announcement at the One Piece Day 2026 convention. For the first time in the franchise’s history, ‘One Piece’ is set to receive a canon theatrical film, adapting the highly anticipated God Valley Incident flashback that recently unfolded in Eiichiro Oda’s manga.

The numbers behind this announcement are turning heads just as much as the reveal itself. The newly released teaser for ‘One Piece Film: God Valley’ has already amassed 21.8 million views on X, officially surpassing the 21.4 million views previously achieved by the trailer for ‘Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba — The Movie: Infinity Castle.’ For a teaser that reportedly doesn’t even feature any actual animated footage yet, this is a remarkable display of fan enthusiasm before production has truly begun.

This comparison is significant, especially considering the massive success of ‘Infinity Castle.’ Released with a budget of around $20 million, the film grossed approximately $737 million worldwide, making it both the highest-grossing anime film and the highest-grossing Japanese film ever released globally, while also being the first animated film to surpass $100 million domestically in North America.

The success of ‘Infinity Castle’ established a commercial model that the rest of the industry has clearly taken note of: narrative urgency. Because the film adapted the true final arc of the ‘Demon Slayer’ manga rather than a standalone side story, fans eager to discover what happened next in the actual narrative had no choice but to head to theaters instead of waiting for a streaming release. ‘Chainsaw Man: The Reze Arc’ followed a similar canon-adaptation model in 2025 with comparable success.

‘One Piece Film: God Valley’ now seems to be following that same strategy, marking the franchise’s first canonical theatrical release in twenty-six years. The film will adapt the God Valley Incident, a legendary battle that occurred roughly thirty-eight years before the series’ current timeline, featuring a massive confrontation between the Roger Pirates and the Rocks Pirates, which has long been regarded as one of the most pivotal moments in ‘One Piece’ lore.

The announcement also confirmed a second film, subtitled ‘Baad,’ scheduled for release sometime in 2029, indicating that Toei Animation may be positioning the franchise for a larger theatrical presence as the story approaches its final stretch. ‘One Piece Film: God Valley’ is currently set for a summer 2027 release in Japan, although details regarding its director, animation staff, and full cast have yet to be revealed.

Given that the official teaser reportedly consists only of a title reveal without any finished animation, the sheer scale of its viewership numbers speaks volumes about current fan appetite. If this level of engagement persists once actual footage starts to roll out, ‘One Piece Film: God Valley’ could very well become one of the most anticipated anime theatrical releases in recent memory.
