‘The Odyssey’ Projected to Exceed $1.7 Billion with IMAX Earnings Surpassing $500 Million
Christopher Nolan has consistently transformed ambitious, adult-oriented epics into major box office successes, but this summer has been particularly remarkable. What began as a bold, three-hour adaptation of one of the oldest tales in Western literature has quietly evolved into the defining cinematic event of the year.
‘The Odyssey’ debuted well above expectations in July, and instead of following the usual blockbuster trend of a quick drop-off, the film has continued to break records throughout its theatrical run. Positive word-of-mouth has propelled it into international markets, including a recent opening in China that surpassed nearly all previous Nolan releases in the region.
Now, industry analysts are forecasting an astonishing final global box office total for the film. ‘The Odyssey’ is currently projected to finish its theatrical run between $1.6 billion and $1.7 billion worldwide, potentially making it the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, as reported by Koimoi. This estimate comes as the film expands into major international markets that had yet to open when it first crossed the billion-dollar threshold.
In addition to the overall total, IMAX’s contribution to the film’s box office has become a significant story in itself. As the first feature entirely filmed with IMAX cameras, ‘The Odyssey’ has already amassed $289 million in IMAX ticket sales globally, according to Variety, surpassing ‘Avatar’s’ previous IMAX record of $271 million. With approximately 800 IMAX screens in China recently added to the film’s release, this figure is expected to exceed $500 million by the time the film concludes its run.

Much of this IMAX success can be attributed to the film’s 70mm presentations, which are Nolan’s preferred format, generating tens of millions of dollars from a limited number of locations worldwide. Many of these 70mm screenings have remained sold out for weeks, a rarity for any film.
The film’s debut in China further fueled its momentum. ‘The Odyssey’ achieved Nolan’s second-largest opening weekend in the country, only behind ‘Interstellar,’ while comfortably outperforming ‘Tenet.’ Such a response in one of the world’s largest and historically challenging markets highlights the film’s strong word-of-mouth appeal beyond North America and Europe.
The film’s box office success is particularly impressive considering its budget and format. With a reported production budget of $250 million, ‘The Odyssey’ has already turned a significant profit before accounting for its ongoing international expansion, according to Koimoi’s analysis of the film’s performance in China. Featuring Matt Damon as Odysseus, alongside Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, and Robert Pattinson, it has become the highest-grossing film for each of these stars.
IMAX’s leadership has positioned the film’s success as a pivotal moment for the future of large-format cinema rather than a one-off achievement. The immersive format has consistently captured a significant share of the film’s total gross relative to its limited number of screens, underscoring the appeal of large-format presentations for major theatrical events.
With China, Japan, and other key markets still contributing to the film’s ongoing rollout, ‘The Odyssey’ shows no signs of slowing down. If current projections hold, Nolan may not only deliver his biggest film ever but also one of the most significant theatrical runs of the post-pandemic era.
