Early 2000s rom-coms have become a reliable source of nostalgia in Hollywood, with studios banking on audiences who cherished these films to show up for a reunion. From ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ to a slew of other legacy sequels, this genre has found renewed life by tapping into that built-in affection.

This trend is now reaching one of the most cherished romantic comedies of the era. The chemistry between Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey in the 2003 original has become a cultural touchstone, with fans hoping for a follow-up for years. Both stars have occasionally hinted at the possibility without fully committing.

That wait may finally be over. According to Variety, Paramount is moving forward with a sequel to ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,’ with Hudson attached to produce the project. The studio aims to bring both Hudson and McConaughey back to reprise their roles as Andie Anderson and Benjamin Barry.

The project is still in the early stages of development, as reported by Variety, with the cast and key creative roles yet to be determined. Stacey Sher, known for her work on films like “Pulp Fiction,” “Erin Brockovich,” and “Django Unchained,” will produce alongside Hudson through her Shiny Penny banner. A screenwriter has not yet been attached, meaning casting decisions will depend on the direction of the finished script.

This isn’t the first time Hudson has mentioned revisiting Andie Anderson. During a 2024 appearance on Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live,” she expressed that both she and McConaughey were open to a sequel, emphasizing that their decision would hinge on whether they liked the script. As recently as January of this year, she confirmed that the project wasn’t officially in development, while reiterating their interest if the right material emerged.

McConaughey has shared similar thoughts over the years, previously telling E!’s Daily Pop that the original felt perfectly set up for a sequel and praised it as one of the strongest entries in the romantic comedy genre. Beyond their professional interest, the two actors have fondly reminisced about their onscreen chemistry, joking during a 2023 Instagram Live celebrating the film’s 20th anniversary about how naturally they worked together and the freedom they felt performing alongside each other.

The original film followed magazine columnist Andie Anderson as she attempted to sabotage a relationship for a story assignment, only to fall for advertising executive Benjamin Barry, who was simultaneously betting his boss that he could make any woman fall for him within the same ten-day timeframe. Directed by Donald Petrie, the film grossed nearly $180 million worldwide against a modest $50 million budget, solidifying its status as one of the defining rom-coms of its time.

Plot details for the sequel remain under wraps, and there’s no confirmation on how closely it will follow the tone or structure of the original. Given the affection surrounding the first film more than two decades later, Paramount seems confident that there’s a genuine audience eager to see where Andie and Benjamin’s story goes next.
