Real-life friendships between actors often lack the spark needed for compelling television, but Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have cultivated a mythology over the years that practically begs for its own show. Their long-standing bond has already withstood a buddy comedy, a prestige crime drama, and numerous public appearances where they seem almost incapable of finishing each other’s sentences incorrectly.

Now, this real-world dynamic has been transformed into scripted television. Apple TV has been teasing this project for months, starting with a poster that hinted at the duo’s uncanny physical resemblance, and now with a full trailer that dives into the rumor that has surrounded both actors since 2023.

Apple TV has officially unveiled the first trailer for ‘Brothers,’ a new comedy series featuring McConaughey and Harrelson as fictionalized versions of themselves. Their lifelong friendship is thrown into disarray when they discover a decades-old secret suggesting they might actually be siblings.

The series follows Harrelson as he moves his family to McConaughey’s Texas ranch after his daughter’s wedding falls apart. The plot thickens when Ma Mac, McConaughey’s on-screen mother played by Holland Taylor, inadvertently reveals a long-buried family secret.

This fictional premise is rooted in a real story that the two actors have shared publicly for years. Harrelson has previously mentioned that the connection arises from comments made by McConaughey’s actual mother, stating to Esquire that he couldn’t confirm anything without a DNA test, but that there were “a lot of almost insane coincidences,” including his father having a relationship with McConaughey’s mother around the time McConaughey was conceived.

The show balances its comedic energy between two parallel crises. While Harrelson tears apart the ranch in search of the truth about their potential shared bloodline, McConaughey grapples with his own identity crisis: a possible run for Governor of Texas, adding a political subplot to the family mystery.

The eight-episode comedy premieres on Sept. 23 with its first two episodes, followed by one new episode released weekly through Nov. 4. Lee Eisenberg serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside McConaughey and Harrelson, with a supporting cast that includes Natalie Martinez as McConaughey’s TV wife Valentina, along with Brittany Ishibashi, Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton, Noah Carganilla, Highdee Kuan, and Oona Yaffe rounding out the ensemble.

This marks the first time the duo has shared the screen since ‘True Detective’ Season 1, and their first return to straight comedy since 1999’s ‘EDtv,’ representing a notable tonal shift given that much of their recent on-screen chemistry has leaned into darker, more dramatic territory. Production on ‘Brothers’ faced challenges behind the scenes, having been suspended in June 2025 due to creative disagreements that led to the exit of original collaborator David West Read before Eisenberg took over as showrunner.

The series eventually found a home under Paramount Television Studios following Skydance Media’s merger into Paramount Skydance in August 2025, a corporate shuffle that ultimately didn’t derail the project’s momentum leading into its now-confirmed September premiere. Given how much McConaughey and Harrelson have teased this mystery in interviews and podcasts over the years, ‘Brothers’ effectively turns years of public speculation into the show’s main selling point.

Whether the series will definitively answer the question of their real-life relation remains to be seen, but the trailer makes it clear that the show isn’t interested in quietly settling that debate.
