Marvel Studios has been striving to regain the box office dominance it enjoyed before the pandemic altered the moviegoing landscape. For much of this time, one benchmark remained elusive: ‘Avengers: Endgame’ has been the gold standard of Marvel box office success since 2019, a film whose impressive numbers seemed destined to last for generations.

However, that reign has been gradually challenged this summer by an unexpected contender from Marvel’s own lineup. Tom Holland’s latest solo adventure debuted with record-breaking anticipation in late July, and instead of waning after a strong start, it continued to add tens of millions to its total nearly every week thereafter.

This momentum has now officially led to a significant shift in the box office hierarchy. According to Deadline, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ has officially become the second highest-grossing movie of all time at the domestic box office, surpassing ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ $858.3 million lifetime total with a new figure of $858.4 million. The film crossed that milestone after adding another $3.4 million during its fourth Monday in theaters, showcasing a remarkably steady performance for a film already a month into its run.

This achievement places ‘Brand New Day’ just behind ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ which still holds the all-time domestic record at $936.6 million. With the film continuing to perform well into its fifth weekend, industry analysts now anticipate it could approach $900 million domestically, positioning it within striking distance of becoming only the second film ever to reach that near-billion-dollar mark in North America.

‘Brand New Day’s’ journey to this milestone began the moment it premiered. The film opened to an impressive $360 million domestically, officially breaking ‘Endgame’s’ previous all-time opening weekend record of $357.1 million, and it went on to become the fastest movie ever to reach $500 million domestically, achieving that feat in just seven days compared to Endgame’s eight.

On the global stage, the film has also been climbing the ranks, recently surpassing $2 billion worldwide in just seventeen days, making it the second-fastest movie in history to reach that milestone, following only Endgame’s eleven-day pace. Featuring Holland alongside Zendaya and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film currently boasts a 90 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and an even more impressive 98 percent audience rating, which likely contributes to its strong box office performance week after week.

Despite this domestic achievement, Endgame’s global record remains firmly intact for now. The 2019 Avengers finale still leads worldwide with its $2.799 billion lifetime total, compared to Brand New Day’s current $2.22 billion, meaning Spider-Man would need to add approximately another half billion dollars internationally to fully dethrone Endgame on the global stage.

Adding an interesting twist to the timing, Disney is set to re-release ‘Avengers: Endgame’ in theaters on Sept. 25 under the title ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore,’ a rollout that could potentially boost Endgame’s domestic total right as Spider-Man seeks to extend its lead. Whether this re-release will significantly impact the ongoing competition between the two films remains to be seen, but the timing has certainly caught the attention of box office analysts.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ on the horizon as Marvel’s next major release this December, ‘Brand New Day’s’ historic run raises important questions about whether Spider-Man has quietly emerged as the studio’s most dependable box office attraction.
