Marvel’s marketing team has been ramping up excitement for the return of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ to theaters, utilizing a blend of nostalgia and star power to enhance the experience. Instead of relying solely on trailers and posters, the studio has begun releasing promotional content featuring the film’s original cast members directly engaging with audiences.

This strategy continued with a new IMAX-produced promo showcasing Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans together in a theater, promoting the rerelease of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ under its new title. The clip highlights the strong chemistry between the two actors, who have portrayed Tony Stark and Steve Rogers for over a decade across various Marvel films.

‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ is set to hit theaters on September 25, bringing Anthony and Joe Russo’s 2019 blockbuster back to the big screen with a revamped presentation tailored for IMAX and Disney’s newly launched Infinity Vision format. As reported by CBR, the rerelease will run for 185 minutes, which is four minutes longer than the original 181-minute theatrical cut, with the additional footage reportedly serving to bridge the story into December’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’

This promotional push is significant, especially considering Downey Jr., whose character Tony Stark died in ‘Endgame,’ is set to return to the MCU in ‘Doomsday’ as Doctor Doom. He will once again collaborate with the Russo brothers, who have been tight-lipped about the specifics of his return, previously describing Doom as a “brand-new character that you can’t even guess at.”

The new promo fits into a larger marketing strategy that has included various merchandise, such as popcorn buckets shaped like Iron Man’s helmet and the Nano-Gauntlet, along with newly revealed posters for both 4DX and Infinity Vision screenings. According to Marvel Studios’ official description, the Encore presentation will feature an exclusive look at ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ with IMAX and Infinity Vision-certified screens offering viewers a sneak peek not available in standard formats.

Infinity Vision represents a new certification standard introduced by Marvel, particularly because IMAX has committed its screens exclusively to Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Three’ for the same December 18 release window as ‘Doomsday.’ Utilizing ‘Endgame Encore’ to familiarize audiences with this new format ahead of time allows Disney to build recognition before ‘Doomsday’ requires that premium screen infrastructure to compete.

Originally, ‘Endgame’ held the title of the highest-grossing movie of all time with a worldwide total of $2.799 billion before ‘Avatar’ reclaimed the top spot during its own pandemic-era rerelease. Early projections from Hollywood Life suggest that ‘Endgame Encore’ could potentially push the film’s lifetime total past ‘Avatar’s’ current $2.923 billion global gross, although this would require attracting a significant number of new viewers who might otherwise choose to stream the film at home.

With Downey Jr. and Evans leading the promotional efforts together, the campaign heavily emphasizes the emotional impact of seeing two of the MCU’s most iconic original Avengers share the screen once more, even if only in a brief promotional clip rather than new film footage. Given the anticipation surrounding Downey Jr.’s mysterious return as Doctor Doom, pairing him with Evans for this nostalgic promo feels like a strategic move to remind audiences of what’s at stake as December approaches.
