Snoop Dogg’s journey from Long Beach to hip-hop legend has always been closely linked to one of music’s most significant friendships. Now, Universal’s upcoming biopic is starting to take shape, filling in crucial details of that story. The studio has been assembling a cast that aims to authentically portray one of the most remarkable eras in rap history.

Jonathan Daviss, recognized for his role in ‘Outer Banks,’ was previously announced as the film’s Snoop Dogg. Myles Bullock will portray Dr. Dre, the producer who discovered Snoop and played a pivotal role in launching his career. Directed by Craig Brewer, known for ‘Hustle & Flow’ and ‘Dolemite Is My Name,’ the film is produced in part by Brian Grazer, the veteran behind ‘8 Mile.’

The project has now cast its Tupac Shakur. Camron Jones, who gained recognition from ‘P-Valley’ and ‘Panic,’ will take on the role of the influential rapper, a casting choice first confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter. The film, titled ‘Snoop,’ is being described as the definitive biopic of the entertainment mogul and is set to release on August 6, 2027.

Jones takes on a role of significant importance, given Shakur’s centrality to Snoop’s early career and the broader narrative of Death Row Records. The two were not only labelmates but also close collaborators, creating tracks like “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted” together before their relationship soured amid the infamous West Coast-East Coast rivalry that defined the mid-1990s rap scene. Shakur’s tragic death in 1996 adds an emotionally charged layer to the film.

Jones isn’t the only recent addition to the cast. Lauren London, known for ‘ATL’ and ‘Without Remorse,’ has also joined the project to portray Snoop’s late mother, Beverly Tate. Deadline was the first to report her involvement. Tate, also known as Beverly Broadus-Green, is credited with giving her son the childhood nickname “Snoopy,” inspired by the “Peanuts” character, which later evolved into his stage name. She passed away in 2021 at age 70.

For Jones, this casting represents a significant leap in his career. In addition to ‘Panic,’ he has appeared in shows like ‘grown-ish,’ ‘The Purge,’ and ‘Shameless,’ and is set to feature in the upcoming third season of Starz’s ‘P-Valley.’ Securing a role as culturally significant as Tupac Shakur in a high-profile studio biopic places him in a unique position among actors who have portrayed the icon in the past.

The film’s screenplay was initially penned by ‘Black Panther’ co-writer Joe Robert Cole, with Brewer later revising it. Snoop Dogg himself is producing alongside Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker, ensuring the story reflects firsthand insights into the era it depicts. The soundtrack is expected to draw directly from Snoop’s extensive musical catalog, adding another layer of authenticity to the film.

With Daviss, Bullock, London, and now Jones completing a cast designed to encapsulate one of hip-hop’s defining chapters, ‘Snoop’ is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated music biopics on the horizon. Fans will have to wait until 2027 to see how it all unfolds on screen.
