Marvel’s decision to reintroduce ‘Avengers: Endgame’ to theaters was always expected to draw attention, but the rerelease has begun breaking records even before any new footage has been shown. What was initially intended as a nostalgic lead-in to December’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has quickly become one of the most surprising box office stories of the year.

Tickets for ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ went on sale Tuesday, August 25, allowing fans to secure their seats ahead of the film’s return in September. This rerelease promises more than just a replay of the original 2019 film, featuring new footage that connects directly to the upcoming ‘Doomsday.’

The excitement translated into impressive numbers almost immediately. Within hours of tickets becoming available, ‘Endgame Encore’ achieved the highest first-day pre-sales this century for any theatrical rerelease, surpassing the previous record set by the 2012 ‘Titanic’ 3D rerelease, which had stood for 14 years.

The overall domestic record for a rerelease is still held by the 1997 ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’ rerelease, which earned $138 million during its run. Whether ‘Endgame Encore’ can eventually challenge that figure remains to be seen, but breaking a 14-year-old record within hours of ticket sales indicates a strong demand for this film.

Part of the excitement stems from the promise of new content. ‘Endgame Encore’ is set to have a runtime of 185 minutes, which is four minutes longer than the original cut from 2019. Reports suggest that the added footage is intended to create a direct narrative link to ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ and Marvel has kept the specifics of these new scenes under wraps, sparking much fan speculation.

There’s also a larger financial milestone at stake. The original ‘Endgame’ theatrical run grossed $2.799 billion worldwide, making it the second-highest-grossing film of all time, just behind ‘Avatar’ at $2.923 billion. With presales already breaking records, there’s a genuine possibility that ‘Endgame Encore’ could close the gap and reclaim the top spot on the all-time global chart.

Achieving a full $3 billion globally is a more ambitious target, but the strength of the presale numbers has reignited discussions about this possibility for a film that is now seven years old. For context, ‘Endgame’ previously made history by surpassing ‘Titanic’s’ worldwide total just two weekends into its original release in 2019, a feat that ‘Titanic’ director James Cameron publicly acknowledged.

Whether ‘Endgame Encore’ can maintain this momentum leading up to its September 25 release will largely depend on the film’s theatrical distribution and the level of interest generated by the new ‘Doomsday’-related footage once details are revealed. Early signs indicate that Marvel has tapped into the nostalgia that made ‘Endgame’ a cultural phenomenon.

For a franchise preparing for its biggest crossover event since 2019, breaking presale records before the film even opens is a strong indicator of Marvel’s ongoing popularity.
