Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ Reboot Gains Excitement With New Cinematographer Announcement
Marvel Studios has been teasing its highly anticipated return to the mutant universe for years, and with the film’s cast now mostly finalized, focus has shifted to the creative team shaping its visual style. Jake Schreier, who recently directed ‘Thunderbolts,’ is at the helm of this reboot and is assembling a talented crew from outside the typical superhero genre.
This became evident this week when cinematographer Pat Scola announced on his website that he will serve as director of photography for Marvel Studios’ ‘X-Men.’ The news quickly circulated among fan accounts, generating excitement about what Scola’s unique background could bring to the film’s aesthetic.
Scola is not a name usually linked with major blockbusters, which adds to the intrigue for fans. His previous works include ‘The Death of Robin Hood,’ ‘Sing Sing,’ ‘A Quiet Place: Day One,’ ‘Pig,’ and ‘Lurker,’ showcasing a filmography focused more on grounded, atmospheric storytelling rather than large-scale spectacle. This will be his debut in the superhero genre.
This artistic background has sparked speculation about the film’s tone. With Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey already appearing in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ ahead of this film’s release, some fans have pointed to that footage as an indication that ‘X-Men’ may adopt a darker and more grounded approach, reminiscent of the original ‘X-Men’ from 2000, rather than the more stylized, animated direction some had hoped for in ‘X-Men ’97.’
Scola joins production designer Kasra Farahani on the crew, working under Schreier from a script co-written by ‘Beef’ creator Lee Sung Jin and ‘Thunderbolts’ writer Joanna Calo. Michael Lesslie, known for ‘The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,’ originally pitched the film when Marvel first began seeking ideas back in 2024.
The cast revealed so far leans heavily on emerging talent. Sink leads as Jean Grey, accompanied by Kit Connor as Cyclops, newcomer Maya Boyd as Storm, and Inde Navarrette, who recently gained recognition in ‘Obsession,’ as Rogue. Christopher Abbott has also been cast as Professor X, with Adam Driver portraying Mister Sinister and Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, creating a lineup that blends established names with fresh faces.
The timeline for production has been less clear than the casting news. While several outlets initially reported filming would start in 2027, more recent crew-sourced information suggests that shooting could actually commence toward the end of this summer, with locations still being finalized between Ireland and Pinewood Studios. Adam Driver appeared to confirm the Pinewood option himself, revealing his casting from a Pinewood soundstage during Marvel’s D23 panel.
‘X-Men’ is set to be the first film of Marvel’s Phase Seven, scheduled for release on May 5, 2028, right after ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ concludes the current saga in December 2027. This timing provides a seamless transition from the mutants’ Fox-era stars, many of whom will return one last time in December’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ before the new generation takes over.
With a cinematographer known for his work in prestige indie films now behind the camera and a cast featuring some of Hollywood’s most talked-about young talents, Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ reboot is shaping up to be one of the studio’s most artistically ambitious projects in years.
