LEGO’s ‘Super Mario’ line has cultivated a dedicated fan base over the years with its interactive gameplay, allowing kids to scan bricks and see Mario respond in real time via a built-in screen. However, LEGO is now indicating a significant shift in direction for the future of this partnership.

This change comes as the current interactive figure format is expected to retire by the end of the year, paving the way for a more traditional LEGO experience. Several existing sets, including the current version of Bowser’s Castle, are also rumored to be retiring to make space for the upcoming releases.

The first glimpse of this new direction was unveiled this week at gamescom in Cologne, where LEGO officially introduced its initial wave of ‘Super Mario’ minifigure sets. This announcement signifies a complete pivot for the theme, transitioning from electronic interactive figures to classic minifigure-based roleplay, a concept that LEGO first hinted at during MAR10 Day celebrations earlier this year.

The initial lineup consists of eight sets, offering a variety of prices and complexity levels. ‘Mario’s Pipe Jump’ is the most affordable option at $9.99, allowing kids to recreate Mario’s iconic pipe entrance while using a lever to launch a Goomba aside so Mario can collect his coin. Following closely is ‘Racing with Mario’ at $14.99, which provides younger builders a taste of the kart-racing sets included in this wave.

The lineup continues with ‘Mario’s Beach Adventures’ at $19.99, ‘Luigi & Bowser Jr.’s Race’ at $29.99, and ‘Yoshi at Mario’s House’ at $39.99. The latter features a slide connecting a garden, bedroom, and kitchen for imaginative play. ‘Bowser’s Rumbling Race’ ups the ante at $59.99, including a Bowser Bruiser, a Toad-driven Zoom Buggy, and a Goomba-piloted Biddybuggy, each equipped with racing features like shell launchers that can shoot fireballs.

Capping off the wave is ‘Fire Mario & Bowser’s Castle’, the priciest set at $99.99, featuring Fire Mario, Bowser, Princess Peach, and Koopa Troopa minifigures, making it the flagship release of the collection. Also included is ‘Fire Luigi vs. Koopa Troopa Battle’, which showcases a fire flower version of Luigi against a Koopa Troopa in a smaller standalone encounter.

Character variety is a significant focus throughout this wave. Mario features multiple minifigure variations, including a standard version, a Fire Mario included with the Bowser’s Castle set, and a beach-ready Mario in the Beach Adventures set. Luigi makes his debut in these new sets alongside the first-ever Bowser Jr. minifigure, a character fans of the Mario Kart series have eagerly anticipated seeing in LEGO form.

Goomba appears frequently across the wave, showing up in four different sets, a fitting tribute to its status as the first enemy players encounter in the original ‘Super Mario Bros.’ Toad and Koopa Troopa also make multiple appearances throughout the lineup, completing a cast that highlights the franchise’s most recognizable characters.

As the interactive figure era comes to a close, this new minifigure-driven wave is positioned as its direct successor rather than a mere addition, indicating LEGO’s belief that classic roleplay building will resonate more with both longtime fans and new collectors.
