Rachel Zegler and Marisa Tomei Share First Look for ‘She Gets It From Me’
Rachel Zegler has embarked on an exciting journey since moving away from Disney fairy tales, and her upcoming project promises a significant tonal shift. Following the mixed reception of “Snow White” earlier this year, the actress is now diving into a more grounded, character-driven narrative for her next major film role.
The film, “She Gets It From Me,” is a comedy-drama that first caught the industry’s attention in April 2025, when Variety reported that Zegler had signed on to star alongside Marisa Tomei. This project brings together two distinct career trajectories, merging Zegler’s rapid ascent since “West Side Story” with Tomei’s extensive and acclaimed body of work, including her Oscar-winning performance in “My Cousin Vinny” and her recent portrayal of Aunt May in three “Spider-Man” films.
Fans are now treated to their first glimpse of the film, with a newly released first-look photo showcasing Zegler and Tomei together on screen. This early look offers audiences a taste of the dynamic between the two leads as they prepare for the film’s eventual release. According to the official logline, the story revolves around a daughter and her birth mother reuniting after years apart, navigating the complexities of their relationship after such a long separation.
Zegler portrays Nicky, whose engagement celebration unexpectedly turns into a quest to find her estranged birth mother, Charlotte, played by Tomei. Charlotte is characterized in earlier reports as a pill-popping, ex-punk rocker grappling with the choice she made years ago to give up her daughter. What starts as an impulsive decision evolves into a chaotic and emotionally charged journey as the two women strive to build a relationship neither anticipated needing.
Directed by Julia von Heinz, known for “Treasure” and Germany’s 2021 Oscar submission “And Tomorrow the Entire World,” the film features a screenplay by Jay Reiss, who also serves as a producer alongside Anna Werner, Susan Leber, and Jack Chinery. Embankment Films managed early sales for the project, which was first pitched at the Cannes Film Festival market in 2025 before production commenced.
The cast has grown significantly since the initial announcement, with Ed Helms and Nat Wolff joining Zegler and Tomei ahead of filming. Principal photography began on February 23 in New Jersey, with additional scenes planned in Germany. This ensemble is designed to support the central mother-daughter dynamic at the heart of the story.
For Zegler, this project marks her first film role since “Snow White,” a release that garnered more attention for its controversies than for the film itself, despite some critics praising her performance as a standout amidst mixed reviews. “She Gets It From Me” offers her an opportunity to lead a more intimate, character-driven story grounded in real emotional stakes rather than blockbuster spectacle.
Tomei continues to build on a career defined by strong supporting and leading roles across various genres, adding another complex character to her impressive résumé, which includes Oscar-nominated performances in “In the Bedroom” and “The Wrestler.” Pairing her with Zegler in a narrative centered on reconciliation and identity provides both actresses ample opportunity to explore something more personal than they have tackled in recent projects.
With production now wrapped and a first-look image circulating, “She Gets It From Me” is steadily progressing toward release, although an official date has yet to be confirmed.
