‘Avengers: Endgame’ Is Nearing the All-Time Box Office Record Again
Seven years after its initial release, ‘Avengers: Endgame‘ continues to make waves in the box office arena. Marvel’s 2019 crossover event previously made history by briefly becoming the highest-grossing film of all time before losing that title back to ‘Avatar.’ Now, the film is once again closing in on the top of the all-time chart.
This journey began in April 2019 when ‘Endgame’ shattered box office records, becoming the first film to surpass $1 billion globally within its opening weekend, amassing an impressive $1.2 billion in just five days. By that summer, it had overtaken ‘Avatar’s’ decade-long reign, finishing with a slim $500,000 lead over James Cameron’s sci-fi masterpiece.
However, ‘Avatar’ eventually reclaimed the crown through its own theatrical re-releases, leaving ‘Endgame’ in second place on the all-time worldwide chart. Recent figures reveal just how close the gap has become: ‘Endgame’ is now only $500,000 away from reaching $2.8 billion globally, needs just $42 million more to surpass $900 million domestically, is $59 million shy of hitting $2 billion internationally, and stands a mere $125 million away from reclaiming the title of the biggest movie in history.
This renewed momentum coincides with Marvel’s plans to re-release the film. ‘Avengers: Endgame: Encore’ is set to hit theaters on September 25, featuring new footage that ties directly into December’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ Co-director Joe Russo has emphasized that this rerelease is more than just a nostalgia trip, stating to Deadline that it creates “a bridge from Endgame to Doomsday in a very unique way,” made possible by the film’s original success allowing for another theatrical run.
Early reports indicate that this bridge is generating significant demand. ‘Endgame Encore’ achieved the largest pre-sales this century for any theatrical rerelease within just hours of tickets going live, positioning the film strongly to close that remaining $125 million gap with relative ease.
Whether ‘Endgame’ can push even further to chase an unprecedented $3 billion worldwide total remains uncertain, but the current momentum suggests that reclaiming the all-time record is well within reach.
The film’s box office resilience is remarkable, especially considering the competitive landscape of theaters since 2019. Marvel’s own ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ recently posted a $360 million domestic opening weekend, narrowly surpassing ‘Endgame’s’ previous record of $357 million. Additionally, low-budget horror hits like ‘Obsession’ have outperformed ‘Endgame’ in specific single-day box office comparisons this year, highlighting the industry’s evolution even as ‘Endgame’ continues to rise.
Despite these challenges, ‘Endgame’ remains on track to reclaim its former glory, and with ‘Encore’ set to add fresh worldwide grosses to its already impressive total, Marvel is poised to reclaim a record it held briefly seven years ago.
