Kate Winslet has spent decades adeptly transitioning between prestigious film and television, but her upcoming project on Netflix promises a scale she’s never tackled before. As one of Britain’s most celebrated actresses broadens her small-screen portfolio, the streaming giant has unveiled her next endeavor, which appears to be a significant shift from her typical dramatic roles.

The project, titled ‘The Unheard’, is a new limited series that marks Winslet’s first major drama for Netflix. The show brings together much of the creative team behind last year’s Emmy-winning sensation ‘Adolescence’, lending the project immediate credibility even before filming begins.

Netflix announced the series during a panel at the Edinburgh TV Festival, where U.K. content head Anne Mensah described ‘The Unheard’ as a ‘Thelma & Louise’-style vengeance thriller. This five-episode series follows two sisters, portrayed by Winslet and Maxine Peake, who find themselves on the run after an act of vengeance goes awry. The narrative unfolds as they are relentlessly pursued, gradually revealing the motivations behind their reckless actions and whether escaping the fallout was ever part of the plan.

Jack Thorne, co-creator of ‘Adolescence’, penned the series and will also serve as an executive producer, collaborating with Winslet, who is producing the project herself. Mounia Akl, known for ‘Costa Brava, Lebanon’ and Netflix’s ‘House of Guinness’, will direct the five-part series, adding to the excitement surrounding her rising profile within the streamer’s original content lineup.

The production team behind ‘The Unheard’ boasts significant talent as well. Warp Films, Matriarch Productions, and Brad Pitt’s Plan B are producing, the same companies responsible for ‘Adolescence’s’ critical acclaim and awards success. Executive producers include Mark Herbert and Emily Feller for Warp Films, Hannah Walters and Stephen Graham for Matriarch Productions, and Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Nina Wolarsky for Plan B, alongside Winslet and Thorne.

Peake, recognized for her recent role in ‘Say Nothing’ and earlier standout performances in ‘Silk’ and ‘Dinnerladies’, is the only confirmed cast member alongside Winslet so far. More casting announcements are anticipated as Netflix continues to build the ensemble ahead of production.

Filming for ‘The Unheard’ is scheduled to commence in 2027, meaning fans of both Winslet and the ‘Adolescence’ creative team will have to wait a while before shooting begins. No release date has been disclosed yet, but with such a talented roster already attached, expectations are soaring.

This announcement came alongside several other high-profile Netflix projects revealed at the same Edinburgh TV Festival panel, including a ‘Top Boy’ spin-off featuring Barry Keoghan and a new Roald Dahl short story anthology series starring Dominic West, Imelda Staunton, and Nicola Coughlan. This lineup highlights Netflix’s aggressive investment in U.K.-based prestige programming centered around well-known stars and acclaimed creators.

For Winslet, ‘The Unheard’ offers an opportunity to lead a tense, morally complex thriller that has become increasingly rare on streaming platforms, especially with a writer who has recently delivered one of the most talked-about television successes.
