Marvel Confirms Two Different ‘Doomsday’ Sneak Peeks for ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’
Marvel Studios has been gradually unveiling details regarding the September rerelease of ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ and each announcement has added more depth to the event. What began as a simple nostalgia trip has evolved into a multi-layered theatrical experience, with the viewing experience significantly influenced by the screen choice of fans.
This layered approach is tied to how Marvel is presenting the new footage related to December’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ Every ‘Endgame Encore’ screening will feature an exclusive preview of the upcoming film, ensuring that all audiences receive some new material, regardless of where they choose to watch. However, the studio has confirmed that a second, distinct preview is available specifically for premium formats, complicating the rollout further.
According to the official breakdown, this second preview consists of an additional four minutes of footage available in all screenings, while an exclusive look is reserved for IMAX and Disney’s newly established Infinity Vision-certified theaters. Moviegoers eager to experience all that Marvel has to offer with this rerelease will need to seek out one of those premium formats instead of opting for a standard screening.
Infinity Vision represents more of a certification standard than a completely new projection technology. Disney and Marvel have established specific benchmarks that screens must meet to earn this designation, including a minimum width of 45 feet, Dolby 7.1 surround sound, and required brightness levels. This allows the studio to market a consistent premium tier across a wide range of participating theaters nationwide.
The timing of the Infinity Vision introduction is strategic. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to open on December 18, coinciding with Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Three,’ and IMAX has already committed its screens exclusively to Villeneuve’s film during that release window. By rolling out Infinity Vision through ‘Endgame Encore,’ Disney is taking a low-risk approach to build recognition for the new format well ahead of ‘Doomsday’ needing it.
Regarding the runtime, ‘Endgame Encore’ runs for 185 minutes, which is four minutes longer than the original 2019 theatrical cut, making it the longest Marvel Studios film to date. Disney has described the added package at CineEurope as including a custom introduction, additional new footage, and a special end tag. However, it remains unclear how the standard four-minute addition and the exclusive sneak peek for IMAX/Infinity Vision differ.
Co-director Joe Russo has kept details about the new content under wraps, confirming only that it is set within the ‘Doomsday’ narrative and serves as a bridge between the two films. This ambiguity has sparked fan speculation, with theories ranging from expanded scenes involving Tony Stark’s legacy to possibilities of how the footage might connect to Robert Downey Jr.’s unexpected return as Doctor Doom.
‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ is set to return to theaters on September 25, with ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ following on December 18. For fans eager to catch every piece of new footage Marvel has included in this rerelease, the choice of theater and format will be more crucial than usual for a standard blockbuster rerelease.
