Jamie Foxx has always been open about reflecting on his most iconic roles, and his recent discussion has sparked renewed interest in one of his most celebrated films. The Oscar-winning actor recently participated in a revealing conversation that shed light on the making of ‘Django Unchained’ in unexpected ways.

Foxx joined his daughter Corinne on the podcast ‘Baby, This Is Keke Palmer,’ where he reminisced about landing the lead role in Quentin Tarantino’s 2012 revenge epic, especially after other actors hesitated due to the graphic nature of the material. He explained to those considering the role that Tarantino’s scripts often differ from the final product on screen.

This distinction became crucial when Foxx delved into specifics. He revealed that Tarantino’s original script for ‘Django Unchained’ included a scene where both his character and Kerry Washington’s character, Broomhilda, were raped, a sequence that ultimately did not make it into the final cut of the film.

“If you read the script, Broomhilda and Django get raped,” Foxx stated, explaining that after discussions with Tarantino and Washington, they decided to protect her from such a traumatic scene.

Timing was significant in this decision. Washington was gearing up to star in ABC’s ‘Scandal’ around that time, a role that would soon make her famous as Olivia Pope. Foxx mentioned that the trio aimed to shield her from a scene that could have lasting implications on her public persona.

Foxx pointed out that unlike many controversial film moments, a scene of that nature could not simply be forgotten once it aired, as clips can resurface and circulate out of context years later. This concern, coupled with Washington’s rising fame, played a key role in Tarantino’s choice to eliminate the scene from the shooting script.

In addition to cutting the scene, Foxx also urged Tarantino to ensure Broomhilda felt more integral throughout the film. He believed Django’s primary motivation stemmed from his love for his wife rather than a broader fight against slavery, emphasizing the need for audiences to feel her presence even when she wasn’t physically on screen. This request led to Tarantino incorporating her into Django’s thoughts and visions throughout the narrative.

Washington herself has corroborated this account. In her 2023 memoir, she recounted the moment she learned the scene had been cut, recalling standing in a cabin on set as Tarantino announced that everyone was going home for the day because the sequence would no longer be part of the film.

‘Django Unchained’ remains one of Tarantino’s most acclaimed and highest-grossing films, marking a reunion for Foxx and Washington, who previously portrayed husband and wife Ray Charles and Della Bea Robinson in 2004’s ‘Ray.’ Their earlier collaboration seems to have had a significant impact behind the scenes years later.

Foxx’s recent podcast appearance also touched on lighter topics, including a series of celebrity impressions that quickly gained traction online. However, it’s this decade-old behind-the-scenes story that is sparking the most conversation among fans revisiting the film’s legacy. It serves as a reminder that even one of the most discussed movies of the past 15 years still holds layers that audiences are just beginning to uncover.
