Box office records are a rare occurrence these days, but ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has been breaking them consistently throughout the summer. Since its record-breaking debut, Tom Holland’s latest portrayal of the wall-crawler has shown no signs of slowing down, consistently defying the usual trends of blockbuster decline.

Sony’s release kicked off with an astounding $355 million domestically and $932 million globally, marking the largest opening weekend in box office history. The film has continued to perform exceptionally well, achieving the third-largest second weekend ever and maintaining its dominance with $39 million in its fourth weekend, already ranking as the third-highest grossing film of all time worldwide.

Currently, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is on track to extend its reign even further. It is projected to remain the number one film both domestically and globally for a fifth consecutive weekend, with estimates of $23 million to $26 million in North America and an additional $45 million to $50 million overseas.

This weekend’s total could push the film past both ‘Ne Zha 2’ and ‘Avatar: The Way of Water,’ making it the third-biggest movie in box office history globally. Currently, only 2009’s ‘Avatar’ at $2.9 billion and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at $2.7 billion are ahead of it on the all-time global chart.

With its rapid ascent, box office analysts are speculating whether it might eventually contend with those two giants for the top position, or at the very least, become the first film to surpass $1 billion at the domestic box office alone. ‘The Force Awakens’ holds the domestic record at $936.6 million, a figure that ‘Brand New Day’ seems increasingly likely to exceed given its remarkable staying power.

The film’s competition has not been able to hinder its momentum either. Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ has remained a strong contender throughout the summer, recently surpassing $500 million domestically in its own fifth weekend, but it has consistently lagged behind Spider-Man at the box office since both films premiered.

Sony and Marvel’s collaboration has already made history multiple times during this run, with the franchise now holding the four biggest worldwide opening weekends of all time, including this film, ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ and ‘Avengers: Infinity War.’ This level of dominance across the industry’s most significant benchmarks highlights how thoroughly this film has captivated audiences.

With the possibility of five consecutive weekends at number one both domestically and globally, ‘Brand New Day’ is proving that audiences still flock to theaters in large numbers for the right blockbuster, even in a summer filled with major releases. Regardless of what happens next, this film has already established itself as one of the defining box office stories of the year.
