Gal Gadot’s journey as Wonder Woman has spanned nearly a decade, beginning with her debut as Diana Prince in 2016’s ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.’ She led two solo films as the character, becoming one of the iconic faces of the previous DC Extended Universe.

With James Gunn taking the helm as co-CEO of DC Studios and rebooting the franchise into the new DCU, Gadot’s future as Wonder Woman has been uncertain. Her last appearances in the DCEU were brief cameos in ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ and ‘The Flash,’ both released in 2023, leaving fans questioning if she might return.

That uncertainty has now been clarified. In an interview with ScreenRant while promoting her new Prime Video thriller ‘The Runner,’ Gadot revealed that she hasn’t had any specific discussions with Gunn or DC Studios regarding reprising her role as Wonder Woman or taking on a new character in the DCU, unlike her former co-star Jason Momoa, who transitioned to the role of Lobo.

Gadot mentioned that the last significant conversation she had with the studio was about developing a third Wonder Woman film with her still in the lead. However, she noted that this discussion occurred some time ago, and she hasn’t received any updates since.

This is a shift from her statements in 2023, where she indicated she had met with Gunn and then co-CEO Peter Safran about moving forward with ‘Wonder Woman 3.’ That project never came to fruition, and Gunn later confirmed via social media that no actor had been officially cast for the DCU’s new interpretation of the character.

With her return seemingly off the table, Gadot chose to gracefully pass the torch instead of expressing bitterness. She told ScreenRant, “This is such an incredible character that so many of us care about so much,” expressing her hope that whoever takes over will enjoy the journey as much as she did.

The new Wonder Woman movie in the DCU is already in development, with Ana Nogueira, known for her work on ‘Supergirl,’ set to write the script. While no actress has been officially confirmed for the role, Adria Arjona has been rumored to be linked to Gunn’s upcoming ‘Man of Tomorrow.’

Some fans remain hopeful about seeing Gadot in the DCU in a different capacity, even if not as Diana Prince. Characters like Big Barda, Talia al Ghul, and Poison Ivy have been suggested among fan casting wishlists, highlighting Gadot’s physicality and screen presence as a perfect fit for other iconic DC roles.

Given the personal significance of the role for her, it’s understandable that Gadot isn’t rushing to take on another DCU character just to remain in the franchise. With her busy schedule filled with outside projects and the emotional connection she has to the character, a proper discussion with Gunn about her future in the DCU may simply require more time.

For now, Gadot is focused on various projects outside the DC universe, including Disney’s live-action ‘Snow White,’ Netflix’s ‘Heart of Stone,’ and her upcoming ‘The Runner’ for Prime Video. Regardless of whether she and Gunn will discuss a new chapter for her in the DCU, her message is clear: she takes pride in what ‘Wonder Woman’ became during her time, and she’s ready to let someone else take up the mantle.
