In recent years, video game adaptations have emerged as one of Hollywood’s most dependable ventures. Once deemed a jinxed genre filled with critical and commercial failures, it has been revitalized by successful titles like ‘The Last of Us,’ ‘Fallout,’ and ‘A Minecraft Movie.’ These successes demonstrate that cherished gaming universes can be transformed into compelling television and box office hits when approached thoughtfully.

Xbox is taking significant steps to leverage this trend. The gaming powerhouse already has notable projects in the pipeline, including the ‘Halo’ series on Paramount+, the ‘Fallout’ adaptation on Amazon, and a live-action ‘Call of Duty’ film currently under development with Paramount. Additionally, reports indicate that more than a dozen other projects are quietly advancing through its extensive portfolio of studios and franchises.

Now, Xbox’s ambitions seem to be growing even bolder. The company has reportedly started pitching Hollywood studios a comprehensive package deal that includes several of its most prominent gaming properties, such as ‘Halo,’ ‘Warcraft,’ and ‘The Elder Scrolls.’ Universal, Netflix, and Paramount are among those reportedly expressing interest in this offering.

This bundled strategy is logical given the vastness of Xbox’s intellectual property library, especially after its acquisitions of ZeniMax Media and Activision Blizzard. With Bethesda’s lineup featuring ‘Elder Scrolls,’ ‘Fallout,’ ‘Doom,’ and ‘Dishonored,’ alongside Activision Blizzard’s ‘Warcraft,’ ‘StarCraft,’ ‘Diablo,’ and ‘Overwatch,’ Microsoft now wields one of the richest collections of narrative-driven gaming IP in the industry.

This extensive portfolio provides Xbox with unique leverage compared to competitors who typically market individual franchises separately. By presenting a slate of major titles collectively, the company is positioning itself as a long-term content collaborator rather than a one-time licensor, echoing strategies employed by companies like Marvel and Nintendo to cultivate enduring franchise ecosystems around their most valuable characters.

Xbox leadership has articulated this Hollywood initiative as a key aspect of a broader vision, asserting that exceptional games serve as cultural touchstones, which in turn evolve into entertainment. This philosophy has already been validated by comparing Xbox’s franchise reach to significant entertainment properties, with executives highlighting ‘Fallout’s’ impressive Amazon viewership and ‘Call of Duty’s’ audience size as proof that gaming IP can compete with Hollywood’s biggest names.

The timing aligns with a larger industry moment of validation. ‘A Minecraft Movie’ approached the billion-dollar mark globally, and its success has reportedly ignited interest among studio executives regarding the potential of other major gaming franchises, including ‘Grand Theft Auto,’ ‘Call of Duty,’ and now Xbox’s broader array of properties.

The recent leadership changes at Xbox add another layer to this narrative, with new Microsoft Gaming CEO Asha Sharma stepping into her role earlier this year following Phil Spencer’s retirement. Her leadership has already underscored the notion that iconic characters, teams, and worlds represent Xbox’s most significant untapped resources, aligning perfectly with the company’s increasing desire for Hollywood collaborations.

Whether this pitch leads to a surge of new greenlights remains uncertain, but the interest from major players like Universal, Netflix, and Paramount indicates that studios are seriously considering Xbox’s proposal. Given the recent success of gaming adaptations, it would not be surprising to see several of these franchises appear on a streaming platform or in theaters in the coming years.

However, it’s important to note that not every gaming adaptation pitch results in a finished product, and even successful franchises can take years of development before reaching the screen. Nevertheless, the vast scope of Xbox’s current offerings, encompassing fantasy, sci-fi, and horror properties, provides studios with ample options if they are genuinely interested in expanding their gaming-adjacent slates.
