Box office records often remain unbroken for years, only to be shattered by the right film at the right time. James Cameron’s ‘Titanic’ has held a prominent position among cinema’s highest earners for nearly thirty years, thanks to several theatrical re-releases that kept its total climbing long after its initial 1997 run.

This enduring success made ‘Titanic’ feel like a permanent fixture on the all-time chart, even as newer blockbusters pursued it year after year. Tom Holland’s latest portrayal of Spider-Man has spent the last month doing just that, enjoying a series of dominant weekends both domestically and internationally.

Now, that pursuit has officially concluded. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ has outperformed the entire theatrical run of ‘Titanic,’ officially claiming the title of the fourth highest-grossing film of all time at the global box office.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and featuring Holland alongside Zendaya, ‘Brand New Day’ generated an additional $39 million domestically and $109 million globally during its fourth weekend in theaters, once again leading both the domestic and international charts. This impressive performance pushed its worldwide total past the $2.2 billion mark, allowing it to finally surpass ‘Titanic’ on the all-time list.

The film’s ascent up the charts has been relentless since its debut. It has already become Sony’s biggest release ever, eclipsing the $1.9 billion earnings of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ and it recently overtook ‘Avengers: Endgame’ to become the second-highest-grossing film ever at the North American box office alone.

With ‘Titanic’ now behind it, ‘Brand New Day’ is now aiming for the 2025 Chinese animated hit ‘Ne Zha 2,’ which currently holds the third spot with approximately $2.27 billion worldwide. The gap between the two films has narrowed to about $50 million, making it likely that Holland’s Spider-Man could ascend even higher on the all-time list in the coming weeks.

Looking ahead, the film still trails behind ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ in third place, as well as ‘Avengers: Endgame’ in second, while James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ remains the reigning box office champion with around $2.9 billion, including re-releases. Complicating matters further, ‘Endgame’ is set for a theatrical re-release on September 25, which could widen its gap with ‘Avatar’ once again.

In other box office news, Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ continues to perform well, currently holding the number two global spot with a worldwide total of $1.44 billion, marking Nolan’s highest-grossing film to date. A new contender, Ridley Scott’s ‘The Dog Stars,’ is set to hit theaters next weekend, adding another player to an already competitive box office landscape.

For now, however, the spotlight is firmly on ‘Brand New Day.’ Projections indicate that the film could finish its run with a worldwide total nearing $2.45 billion, a figure that would bring it closer to even more milestones before its theatrical run concludes. Given its consistent performance above expectations so far, few would wager against Holland’s Spider-Man climbing even higher before all is said and done.
