Aardman’s Stop-Motion Pokémon Series ‘Pokémon Tales The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d & Pichu’ Release Date and Details
Over the past three decades, Pokémon has made its mark across various entertainment mediums, including video games, trading cards, and a vast anime series that has followed trainers through numerous regions. However, the franchise has yet to fully explore a narrative from the creatures’ perspective, without any human trainers involved.
This gap is set to be filled by Aardman, the renowned British studio known for ‘Wallace & Gromit,’ ‘Chicken Run,’ and ‘Shaun the Sheep.’ Their partnership with The Pokémon Company was first announced in December 2024, promising a unique stop-motion series that breaks new ground for the franchise.
Recently, a significant update emerged with the release of a new teaser for ‘Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d & Pichu’ during a PokémonXP panel titled “Behind the Scenes with Aardman.” The series is confirmed to premiere exclusively on Disney+ worldwide in 2027.
The panel featured insights from director Tom Parkinson, creative director Natalie McKay, and creative lead James Young, revealing that the series will be a dialogue-free comedy. Neither Sirfetch’d nor Pichu will utter a single word, emphasizing Aardman’s legacy of visual storytelling that relies on physical comedy and character expressions instead of dialogue.
Set in the Galar region introduced in ‘Pokémon Sword and Shield,’ the series pairs Sirfetch’d, the comically serious evolution of Farfetch’d, with Pichu, Pikachu’s playful pre-evolution. A dedicated team of 262 animators is meticulously crafting each set and character by hand to bring this stop-motion world to life.
Earlier this year at Annecy, Aardman chief creative director Sarah Cox discussed the project’s artistic direction, describing it as a hand-crafted take on beloved Pokémon characters, centered around comedic storytelling that highlights their quirks as they embark on an unconventional quest in Galar. She emphasized the shared commitment to creativity and craftsmanship between Aardman and Pokémon, aiming to bring joy to audiences worldwide.
The timing for Aardman couldn’t be better, following the tremendous success of ‘Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl,’ which became one of the most-watched programs on UK television during Christmas 2024, amassing an impressive 21.6 million viewers by the end of January.
This recent triumph gives fans ample reason to be excited about this new collaboration. The teaser already showcases Aardman’s signature style, featuring a grazing Wooloo that echoes the design of Shaun the Sheep, hinting at the gentle, character-driven humor that awaits when the series debuts.
With Disney+ confirmed as the exclusive platform for ‘Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d & Pichu,’ fans have a clear destination to anticipate in 2027. Given Aardman’s established reputation and Pokémon’s vast audience, this handcrafted spinoff is poised to attract viewers beyond the franchise’s traditional fanbase.
This series also signifies a pivotal moment in Pokémon’s broader animation strategy, which has increasingly diversified into various visual styles and storytelling methods beyond its long-standing anime. Collaborating with a distinctive studio like Aardman adds a level of craftsmanship that few animated tie-ins in the franchise’s history have attempted.
