‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Runtime May Exceed Initial Reports
Marvel has dedicated much of this year to building anticipation for ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ touted as the franchise’s largest team-up event since ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ The film’s extensive ensemble cast and numerous storylines have led fans to expect a longer runtime.
This expectation was first confirmed in mid-July when The Hollywood Reporter disclosed that the film’s working runtime was 165 minutes, or two hours and 45 minutes. At that time, ‘Doomsday’ was positioned as the second-longest Avengers film in the franchise, only behind ‘Endgame,’ which runs for three hours and one minute, while surpassing both ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and the earlier team-up films.
Recent reports suggest that the runtime for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ could be even longer than previously indicated, reigniting speculation that it may surpass ‘Endgame’ to become the longest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
This speculation is not unfounded. During San Diego Comic-Con this year, co-director Anthony Russo referred to the film’s runtime as substantial, though he refrained from providing a specific figure. When asked if the film could exceed three hours, he gave a teasing response, implying that fans would be pleased with the final product without directly confirming or denying the possibility.
Given that the July runtime was described as not yet finalized, largely due to the film’s December release date being some time away, it’s not surprising that the number has continued to evolve as post-production progresses. Any further increase would bring ‘Doomsday’ closer to challenging ‘Endgame’s’ status as the longest and most expansive entry in the franchise.
The film’s runtime concerns stem from the vast ensemble Marvel is assembling. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will feature original Avengers, newer MCU heroes, several X-Men actors from the Fox era, the cast of the Fantastic Four, and Robert Downey Jr. returning as Doctor Doom after over a decade of portraying Tony Stark.
This scale marks a reunion for directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who previously directed ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ before stepping away from the MCU after that film’s monumental success. Their return, alongside such a large cast, has heightened expectations that ‘Doomsday’ will require every extra minute to adequately address its characters and narratives.
With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ still months away from its December 18 release, it’s likely that the final runtime won’t be confirmed until much closer to the premiere. Given the extensive ground this film reportedly needs to cover, it wouldn’t be surprising if the runtime continues to grow before Marvel makes any official announcements.
