Ex Machina’s AI-Generated Series ‘Kira’ Set for MIPCOM with First Look
Artificial intelligence is transforming the landscape of movie and show development, yet fully AI-generated productions remain a rarity in the industry. Many studios are proceeding cautiously, mindful of the creative limitations and backlash that have accompanied previous AI experiments in Hollywood.
One company taking a bold step is Ex Machina, an AI-focused production outfit that has been quietly working on ambitious feature films with seasoned filmmakers Roger Avary and Alex Proyas. Now, they are venturing into television for the first time.
Ex Machina is unveiling its next project, an entirely AI-generated sci-fi series titled ‘Kira.’ Sales partner K5 International is set to kick off pre-sales for the show at October’s MIPCOM market in Cannes, with production on the six-part epic drama anticipated to begin shortly.
‘Kira’ is created by French filmmakers Damien Steck and Julien Petit, who previously collaborated on the Tribeca entry ‘Cherry,’ with Steck serving as the director of photography. The duo is credited as creators, directors, and writers on ‘Kira,’ marking a significant escalation in scale from their earlier work.
Marco Weber, co-founder and CEO of Ex Machina and a veteran producer known for ‘Igby Goes Down,’ is executive producing the series. His involvement underscores the significance of ‘Kira’ in the company’s broader initiative to explore AI-driven storytelling beyond its existing feature film projects.
According to the official synopsis, ‘Kira’ unfolds in the distant future on a living planet named Djena, following a young girl with a great destiny as she traverses a constantly changing landscape and encounters mysterious factions in search of her missing father, all while striving to restore balance to her world. This premise embraces familiar chosen-one storytelling tropes, yet the fully AI-generated visual style positions the series as a genuine experiment in pushing the boundaries of epic, world-building science fiction on a television budget.
First-look concept images released with the announcement provide an early glimpse into the world of Djena, showcasing the visual style Ex Machina aims to achieve ahead of the show’s MIPCOM debut. Given the project’s early stage, these images represent some of the few concrete details available about the series at this point.
The introduction of ‘Kira’ adds a new dimension to Ex Machina’s expanding portfolio, which has primarily focused on ambitious feature film projects with established filmmakers like Avary and Proyas. The move into episodic television indicates the company sees significant commercial potential in longer-form AI-generated storytelling, especially as buyers at markets like MIPCOM begin to assess what this type of production can deliver.
Whether ‘Kira’ secures buyers at its October debut will likely serve as an early indicator of the television industry’s receptiveness to fully AI-generated content at this scale. With production expected to commence soon after the MIPCOM pre-sales push, more information regarding casting, voice work, and release timing should emerge in the coming months.
As AI continues to reshape storytelling in film and television, ‘Kira’ stands out as one of the most ambitious attempts to create an entire epic universe using this technology.
