Pedro Pascal Stars in Tony Gilroy’s Awards-Season Contender ‘Behemoth!’ – Check Out the New Look
Awards season often builds anticipation long before the trophies are awarded, and this year, one passion project is already generating significant buzz. When a filmmaker known for meticulous, character-driven storytelling returns to the director’s chair after a decade, industry insiders take notice.
That excitement has intensified around Tony Gilroy’s ‘Behemoth!’, marking the acclaimed writer-director’s first feature film since 2012’s ‘The Bourne Legacy.’ In the years since, Gilroy has been busy crafting the celebrated Star Wars series ‘Andor,’ making this return to original feature filmmaking particularly noteworthy in Hollywood.
The anticipation received a fresh boost with the release of a new image showcasing Pedro Pascal in character ahead of the film’s theatrical release on December 4. This photo provides another glimpse into the world Gilroy has created, centered around Pascal’s performance as the film approaches its awards-season debut.
Pascal plays Alex Serian, a talented cellist who returns to Los Angeles after nearly twenty years on the road. This role marks his first true solo lead in a feature film. According to the film’s official synopsis, music has been a constant, all-consuming force in Alex’s life, ultimately leading him toward an adventure that transforms him forever.
Notably, Pascal stepped into the role after Oscar Isaac exited the project, taking on a part that requires him to perform much of his own cello work on screen. This commitment to authenticity has become a talking point, with early trailer footage showing Pascal deeply focused among fellow string players.
The ensemble cast is impressive, featuring Eva Victor as Nadia, a fellow cellist and Alex’s love interest, while Olivia Wilde plays an ex from his past, and Will Arnett portrays his brother. Arnett had to reshoot scenes originally filmed with David Harbour, who left the project for personal reasons.
Hank Azaria, Matthew Lillard, JoBeth Williams, and Margarita Levieva complete the supporting cast, providing Gilroy with an ensemble capable of supporting the film’s reportedly dialogue-heavy, character-driven narrative. The story is said to alternate between the orchestra and Alex’s real life, using the film’s score as an active narrative element rather than mere background music.
‘Behemoth!’ has already garnered significant recognition, having been chosen as the Centerpiece selection for the 64th New York Film Festival. This designation is often reserved for films believed to be entering the peak awards-season conversation at just the right time.
Searchlight Pictures, the studio behind previous awards-season hits like ‘Poor Things’ and ‘Nomadland,’ has positioned ‘Behemoth!’ within its traditional December release strategy. This timing is designed to keep the film fresh in voters’ minds while allowing for word of mouth to build ahead of the holidays. Given Gilroy’s reputation and the strength of the cast, expectations for the film’s awards prospects are high.
With a script by Gilroy and direction that marks his return to the personal filmmaking style of 2007’s ‘Michael Clayton,’ ‘Behemoth!’ is poised to be one of the season’s standout offerings. Fans eager to see Pascal take on a different role won’t have to wait much longer, as the film hits theaters this December.
