Legacy sequels have become a hallmark of Hollywood in recent years, with studios increasingly tapping into beloved titles for new box office success. However, few franchises have sparked as much excitement as this latest revival from Tom Cruise’s impressive filmography.

‘Days of Thunder,’ the 1990 NASCAR drama that solidified Cruise’s status as a leading action star, has remained a cult favorite despite its modest box office performance. The film, which reunited Cruise with ‘Top Gun’ director Tony Scott, delivered a high-octane racing experience that became iconic in its time.

Now, after years of anticipation, a sequel is officially in the works. Anne Hathaway will join Cruise in the next installment of ‘Days of Thunder,’ as confirmed exclusively by Variety, with Paramount Pictures scheduling the release for June 2, 2028, nearly four decades after the original film debuted.

Cruise will reprise his role as Cole Trickle, the fiery rookie driver who captivated audiences back in 1990. Hathaway will take on a new character as a racecar team owner and engineer. While plot details are still under wraps, the casting news has already ignited a frenzy among fans on social media.

Jonathan Levine, known for directing ’50/50′ and ‘Long Shot,’ will direct the sequel from a script by Will Staples, who has worked on major video game franchises as well as feature films. Cruise is producing the film alongside Jerry Bruckheimer, who also produced the original, and Tommy Harper.

The project is set to be filmed specifically for IMAX screens, with plans for a theatrical release across various premium formats, including Dolby Cinema and 4DX. This ambitious approach indicates Paramount’s serious commitment to making this sequel a major cinematic event rather than just a nostalgic throwback.

Cruise shared the casting announcement over the weekend, posting a promotional image of himself and Hathaway beside a NASCAR race car in Daytona, featuring the film’s new logo and release date. Hathaway humorously remarked during the announcement that she would need to have her baby first before production could kick off, a lighthearted reference to her current life situation.

Hathaway joins this project after a particularly busy year, having appeared in ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2,’ Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ and ‘The End of Oak Street,’ with her adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s ‘Verity’ still to come this October. Her involvement in ‘Days of Thunder 2’ feels like a natural progression in what is shaping up to be a defining year for her career.

For Cruise, this sequel comes as he continues to expand his post-‘Mission: Impossible’ projects, having hinted at ongoing development during interviews about his future plans. Given his well-known dedication to large-scale theatrical experiences, expectations are already high for how this sequel will modernize the franchise’s iconic racing scenes.

With production expected to begin in 2027 ahead of its 2028 release, fans will have to wait a while to see Cruise and Hathaway on screen together. In the meantime, speculation regarding the sequel’s plot and supporting cast is likely to continue growing in the months to come.
