Aardman’s Claymation Pokémon Series Reveals New Behind-the-Scenes Footage Fans Love
Stop-motion animation possesses a unique magic that CGI often struggles to replicate, and few studios excel in this craft like the team behind ‘Wallace & Gromit.’ When this iconic studio announced its collaboration with one of gaming’s most significant franchises, expectations soared.
This partnership is for ‘Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d and Pichu,’ Aardman Animations’ upcoming claymation series created in collaboration with The Pokémon Company. Following the success of Netflix’s stop-motion series ‘Pokémon Concierge,’ this new project represents the franchise’s most ambitious stop-motion effort to date, thanks to Aardman’s extensive experience in the medium.
Recently, new footage showcasing the intricate craftsmanship behind the series has begun to circulate, offering fans an intimate glimpse at the puppet work that brings Pichu to life on screen. The clip emphasizes the labor-intensive process of animating the character frame by frame, a technique that demands remarkable patience due to the traditional stop-motion production’s demanding nature.
This meticulous attention to detail aligns with what has been shared about the show’s rigorous production timeline. According to one Aardman animator, just thirteen seconds of finished footage can take an entire week to produce, which helps clarify why such projects often require years to complete, despite resulting in a visually distinctive outcome.
The series features Sirfetch’d and Pichu, characterized by the creative team as a knight and squire duo embarking on a noble quest to assist and protect Pokémon throughout the Galar region, which is inspired by the UK and was first introduced in ‘Pokémon Sword’ and ‘Shield.’ Notably, the narration is entirely from the Pokémon’s perspective, with the creatures only vocalizing their names while the storytelling unfolds through animation, expression, and physical performance rather than conventional dialogue.
Peter Lord, Aardman’s co-founder and creative director, mentioned that the project takes place in a region that resonates deeply with the studio, given Galar’s strong connections to British culture and setting. He emphasized that the series aims to provide audiences with a genuinely unique perspective on the Pokémon world, narrated solely from the Pokémon’s viewpoint.
This approach places Pichu, rather than the more frequently highlighted Pikachu, at the forefront of the story alongside Sirfetch’d, the green-onion-wielding duck Pokémon first introduced during the Galar generation. Early promotional material has already embraced the kind of chaotic, character-driven humor that Aardman is renowned for, as seen in projects like ‘Chicken Run’ and ‘Shaun the Sheep.’
‘Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d and Pichu’ is set to premiere exclusively on Disney+ in 2027, with the Disney XD channel also slated to broadcast the series. This release is part of a wider global distribution partnership between Disney+ and The Pokémon Company International, which has already brought the original ‘Indigo League’ season of the classic anime to the platform.
As the franchise increasingly embraces prestigious animation collaborations to expand its storytelling beyond traditional anime, partnering with a celebrated studio like Aardman represents a significant creative leap. Given the studio’s history with beloved, character-driven stop-motion projects, excitement for this Pokémon collaboration continues to build as the release date approaches.
