Some television locations achieve fame that rivals the shows themselves, and few have gone as viral recently as the remote cabin featured in ‘Heated Rivalry.’ This Canadian hockey romance became an unexpected pop-culture sensation after its debut on Crave and subsequent arrival on HBO Max, turning its cast and one specific filming location into overnight stars.

That location belongs to Michael Kutryk, a doctor based in Toronto, whose Muskoka retreat served as the backdrop for Shane Hollander’s private getaway with Ilya Rozanov in the show’s iconic Season 1 finale, “The Cottage.” This episode marked a pivotal moment for the series, propelling both the storyline and Kutryk’s home into the limelight almost instantly.

As production for Season 2 is already in progress, Kutryk has shared insights into what it took to allow the show to return to his property. In a conversation with HGTV, the homeowner explained that agreeing to another round of filming was not an automatic choice, revealing a period of genuine contemplation before giving his consent.

“I did a little bit of soul searching about allowing them to come back,” Kutryk stated. “I know they need it, and I realize I [could] be difficult and try to squeeze them, but I [couldn’t] bring myself to do that.”

According to Kutryk, the negotiations for the return visit unfolded with an unexpected level of goodwill from both parties. “When they called, they said, ‘How much do you want?’ First, I told them they scratched my table, then I named a very reasonable price,” he recounted. “They were shocked and appreciative. I actually didn’t even get them to replace my table.”

This generosity mirrors the arrangement Kutryk made the first time. He noted that the production had a “very small budget” when they initially approached him, and he ultimately agreed to let them film for what he described as “almost nothing,” a decision he admits he nearly regretted once filming began.

Kutryk’s home was discovered through a location scout who connected with the property’s architect before reaching out to the doctor directly. He recalled being taken aback by how quickly the production moved once filming commenced, recalling a moment when black SUVs arrived outside his home as crew members began discussing logistics like porta-potty placement.

Despite the disruptions, Kutryk expressed satisfaction with how the finished episode turned out, though he admitted he was surprised by how much of his actual home appeared onscreen. His willingness to open his doors once more highlights the unique bond that can develop between real homeowners and the productions that transform their private spaces into television landmarks.

With filming for ‘Heated Rivalry’ Season 2 having commenced on August 10 and expected to continue through early December across Muskoka, Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa, fans can look forward to seeing the beloved cottage return to their screens once the new season premieres.
