Nostalgia-driven reboots have become a staple in Hollywood, with studios tapping into beloved animated classics for live-action adaptations. Among these projects, few sparked as much enthusiasm among longtime fans as Disney’s intention to revive ‘Gargoyles’ in a darker, more mature format nearly three decades after the original series first enchanted viewers.

The excitement began to build in October 2023 when it was announced that ‘Annabelle’ writer Gary Dauberman and James Wan’s Atomic Monster were developing a live-action version of the cult classic for Disney+. Dauberman was set to write, executive produce, and showrun the project, envisioning a series that was dark, serialized, and mature while remaining faithful to the animated original’s sword-and-sorcery, sci-fi elements.

However, nearly three years after that initial announcement, the project’s future has taken a definitive turn. Greg Weisman, co-creator of the original series, confirmed during a Fan Expo Canada livestream that the live-action ‘Gargoyles’ project from Dauberman, Atomic Monster, and Disney+ is officially not moving forward.

Weisman mentioned that he is currently unaware of any other plans to revive the concept elsewhere, leaving the future of the franchise in live-action format uncertain for now. This news is disappointing for fans who have been following the project’s slow but steady development over the years, hoping to see the beloved animated world finally brought to life.

The original ‘Gargoyles’ series aired from 1994 to 1997 on Walt Disney Television Animation and followed a clan of stone warriors cursed centuries ago in Scotland, who awaken in modern-day New York City after their castle is relocated by wealthy industrialist David Xanatos. Once freed, the gargoyles, led by Goliath, take on the responsibility of protecting the city alongside police detective Elisa Maza, making it one of the more thematically ambitious entries in Disney’s television animation catalog.

The show gained a reputation for its darker, serialized storytelling compared to much of its Disney Afternoon programming peers, drawing parallels to contemporaries like ‘X-Men’ and ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ for its mature tone and complex narratives. This legacy is part of what made the live-action reboot announcement feel like a natural fit for Dauberman and Wan, both recognized for their horror-tinged sensibilities through projects like ‘The Nun’ and the ‘Annabelle’ franchise.

Weisman has consistently been a vocal advocate for the franchise over the years, expressing a deep personal connection to the property despite not owning it. He has previously shared his excitement about seeing ‘Gargoyles’ reach new audiences through its availability on Disney+, even without any financial stake in the show’s ongoing popularity.

While Weisman noted that there had been some discussions earlier this summer about a potential new animated series, those talks reportedly went nowhere, leaving fans with little concrete news about the franchise’s future beyond its existing comic book continuation. For now, it seems ‘Gargoyles’ fans will have to wait for another opportunity to see Goliath and his clan return to screens in any format.
