The Russo Brothers Insist You Can’t Understand ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Without ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’
Marvel Studios has been heavily leaning into nostalgia as it gears up for one of the most significant releases in its history. With ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ just months away, the studio’s marketing efforts have increasingly focused on the past, reviving one of its greatest successes to set the stage for what lies ahead.
That success is ‘Avengers: Endgame,‘ the 2019 blockbuster that concluded the Infinity Saga and became one of the highest-grossing films of all time. The film is returning to theaters this fall as ‘Avengers Endgame: Encore,’ a re-release tailored for Disney’s new Infinity Vision premium format, featuring a custom introduction, additional footage, and a special end tag exclusive to IMAX and Infinity Vision screenings.
Now, the directors of both films are making a bold claim about the necessity of this re-release. In a conversation with Fandango, Joe Russo emphasized that watching ‘Endgame Encore’ in theaters is not merely a nostalgic treat for fans but rather essential preparation ahead of ‘Doomsday’s’ December release.
“There’s a natural progression from Endgame into Doomsday, which also includes all the other stories that have been unfolding,” Joe Russo stated, according to Fandango. “But I think it’s crucial to see Endgame again in theaters for two reasons: One, if you want to relive the excitement and emotions from the first time you saw it. Two, I believe it’s required viewing for following the story in Doomsday.”
His brother and co-director, Anthony Russo, added that the new footage carries significant narrative weight for what’s ahead. “If you saw Endgame when it was first released, you couldn’t predict this,” Anthony hinted, suggesting that the new material connects directly to ‘Doomsday’s’ storyline in unexpected ways for long-time fans.
These comments represent a shift from what Joe Russo mentioned earlier at SXSW London, where he referred to ‘Doomsday’ as Marvel’s “phase zero,” presenting the film as a fresh entry point meant to stand apart from nearly two decades of interconnected storytelling. Now framing ‘Endgame Encore’ as essential viewing seems to contradict that earlier statement, a tension that hasn’t gone unnoticed by fans online.
Reactions have been mixed since these comments circulated widely on social media. Some fans have expressed skepticism about the notion that a few extra minutes of footage, reportedly extending the re-release to 185 minutes—four more than the original theatrical cut—should be deemed essential prerequisite viewing for a brand-new film coming years later.
‘Avengers Endgame: Encore’ will hit theaters ahead of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’s’ December 18 release, providing audiences with a limited opportunity to catch the new footage before the next chapter begins. Whether the connections the Russos are hinting at will be as significant as they suggest, or merely a minor easter egg dressed as essential lore, will be revealed once both films are actually released.
