Stop-motion animation has a unique way of making even the most familiar worlds feel fresh, and few studios capture that essence better than Aardman. Known for their meticulous craftsmanship, the team behind ‘Wallace & Gromit’ is now applying their artistry to one of gaming’s most beloved franchises.

This collaboration was first announced back in December 2024, when The Pokémon Company and Aardman revealed their partnership for an original stop-motion series. Since then, updates have been released gradually, including a teaser short at the initial announcement and a full title reveal during Pokémon Presents, building excitement for what the final product will look like in action.

The wait culminated this week at the Pokémon XP fan event in San Francisco, where The Pokémon Company International and Aardman unveiled a brand-new teaser trailer for ‘Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d & Pichu.’ This gave fans their most comprehensive look yet at the stop-motion animation set in the franchise’s Galar region.

The trailer premiered during a “Behind the Scenes with Aardman” panel at the 2026 Pokémon World Championships, which attracted around 50,000 fans for a weekend filled with competitive play, parades, and live performances. During the panel, Pokémon’s director of original animation, Phil Rynda, joined Aardman creatives Tom Parkinson, Nat McKay, and James Young to discuss the making of the series.

Rynda emphasized the rich texture and atmosphere Aardman’s signature style brings to the world of Galar. “Audiences will be delighted getting to know the Sirfetch’d & Pichu, and wonderful cast of Pokémon featured in this series,” Rynda stated, as reported by Complex. “Aardman has brought Galar to life in a way that makes you feel like you can smell the air, touch the tree bark, and want to adventure alongside our series heroes.”

The series follows Sirfetch’d, a noble yet bumbling knight, and Pichu, his playful squire, as they journey across Galar helping other Pokémon they meet. Notably, the show tells its story without any spoken human dialogue, relying instead on puppetry and Pokémon vocalizations limited to their own names, reminiscent of past entries like ‘Pokémon Concierge.’

This project represents a significant creative endeavor for both companies, combining Aardman’s decades of clay and stop-motion expertise, honed on beloved properties like ‘Wallace & Gromit’ and ‘Shaun the Sheep,’ with one of the most recognizable video game franchises globally. Aardman’s recent Christmas special, ‘Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl,’ became the most-watched animated show in the UK since records began, indicating the studio remains as innovative as ever as they embark on this new venture.

‘Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d & Pichu’ is set to premiere on Disney+ and Disney XD in 2027, although an exact release date has yet to be confirmed. With the first official footage now available, fans have much to discuss while they await further details.
