‘Scooby-Doo: Origins’ Wraps Filming with 2027 Premiere Window Confirmed
Since its inception in 1969, ‘Scooby-Doo’ has shown remarkable resilience, evolving through Saturday morning cartoons, theatrical films, and various live-action adaptations. Every few years, a new take on Mystery Inc. emerges, and this time, Netflix is set to explore how the gang first came together.
The project, titled ‘Scooby-Doo: Origins’, is being developed by Midnight Radio’s Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, with Greg Berlanti serving as an executive producer. Filming began in Atlanta earlier this year, joining a roster of Netflix originals currently in production in the city, including ‘Stranger Things’ and ‘Sweet Magnolias’.
Netflix has officially announced that filming has wrapped, confirming a premiere window for the live-action series in 2027. This update provides fans with their clearest timeline yet for a project that has been gradually taking shape since its announcement in early 2025.
The series reinterprets the gang’s origin story, set during their last summer at Camp Ruby-Spears. Longtime friends Shaggy and Daphne find themselves drawn into a haunting mystery involving a lonely Great Dane puppy, who may have witnessed a supernatural murder. They team up with the pragmatic Velma and the charming new kid, Fred, to solve the case.
Mckenna Grace stars as Daphne Blake, with Tanner Hagen as Shaggy Rogers, Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma Dinkley, and Maxwell Jenkins as Fred Jones. Paul Walter Hauser also joins the cast in a role that Netflix has kept under wraps, leading to speculation about whether he plays a suspect connected to the mystery or lends his voice to Scooby himself.
This project marks a significant creative choice, as it is the first time Scooby-Doo will be portrayed as a fully live-action dog, rather than through animation or a costumed performer. Earlier this year, Netflix shared a first look at Scooby, showcasing him bounding across the set and jumping into Shaggy’s arms while wearing his iconic teal collar.
For a franchise that boasts three theatrical films and nearly forty animated home releases, ‘Scooby-Doo: Origins’ represents Netflix’s effort to infuse a darker, more character-driven approach to material that has typically leaned towards lighthearted spookiness. This tonal shift aligns with the streaming service’s broader strategy of developing grounded, teen-focused mystery content within its Atlanta production slate.
With filming now complete, focus will shift to post-production as Netflix aims to finalize a more specific release date within the 2027 window. Fans of the franchise, from the early 2000s theatrical films to 2009’s ‘Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins’, will have ample time to ponder how this modern reimagining will compare when it finally debuts.
Given the enduring affection for the Mystery Inc. gang, anticipation for ‘Scooby-Doo: Origins’ is expected to grow steadily as Netflix reveals more details in the coming months.
