New ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ BTS Photos Showcase Whitney Peak, McKenna Grace & Elle Fanning
Panem’s dystopian landscape has always been marked by tragedy, and the upcoming prequel is set to explore some of its darkest history. ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping‘ is drawing fans back to the arena with a narrative that predates the struggles of Katniss Everdeen, and excitement is building as the release date approaches.
The film follows a young Haymitch Abernathy, portrayed by Australian actor Joseph Zada, twenty-four years before the events of the original ‘Hunger Games’ trilogy. Instead of the hardened, whiskey-loving mentor fans recall from Katniss’s Games, this version presents Haymitch as a 16-year-old tribute forced to compete in the 50th annual Hunger Games, which also serves as Panem’s brutal Second Quarter Quell.
Recently released behind-the-scenes photos featuring stars Whitney Peak, Mckenna Grace, and Elle Fanning have surfaced, giving fans an intimate look at the cast in character, distinct from the polished promotional images that have been shared so far.
These images follow a series of exclusive cover portraits from Entertainment Weekly, which provided audiences with their first in-depth look at how each actor embodies their respective roles.
Peak plays Lenore Dove Baird, Haymitch’s love interest and a descendant of the covey, the same group connected to Rachel Zegler’s Lucy Gray Baird from ‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’. Reflecting on the film’s importance, Peak described it as a crucial turning point for the franchise’s broader rebellion narrative, calling it “kind of the first domino” in comments made to Entertainment Weekly for the outlet’s cover story.
The stakes in this particular Games are particularly high. The 50th Hunger Games marks the Second Quarter Quell, which mandates that each district must send double the usual number of tributes into the arena, resulting in 48 children competing against each other instead of the standard 24. This increased tribute pool places Grace’s character, Maysilee Donner, directly in the arena alongside Haymitch as one of the District 12 competitors fighting for survival.
Elle Fanning completes the trio highlighted in the new images, taking on the role of a younger Effie Trinket, a character originally portrayed by Elizabeth Banks in the first four films. The cast surrounding them is impressive, featuring major names such as Glenn Close as Drusilla Sickle, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Ralph Fiennes as a younger President Snow, and Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman.
Francis Lawrence, who has directed every ‘Hunger Games’ film since ‘Catching Fire’, returns to helm this installment, working from a screenplay by Billy Ray based on Suzanne Collins’ novel of the same name. The book itself achieved significant commercial success, selling 1.5 million copies across several English-speaking markets in its first week alone.
With ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ scheduled to hit theaters on November 20, anticipation continues to rise as more cast imagery and details emerge leading up to the release. Given the doubled tribute pool, the emotional journey of Haymitch’s transformation, and a star-studded ensemble, the film is poised to be one of the franchise’s most ambitious entries yet.
