Los Javis’ Cannes-Winning ‘La Bola Negra’ Releases First Posters with Teaser Coming Soon
Spanish cinema has seen its share of festival favorites, but few have sparked the intense bidding war that followed this year’s Cannes Film Festival. One film, in particular, stood out as the highlight of the Croisette, ultimately securing a distribution deal with Netflix after a fierce competition.
That film is ‘La Bola Negra’, a sweeping historical drama from the Spanish directing duo Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, known as Los Javis. Drawing inspiration from an unfinished work by poet Federico García Lorca, the film spans nearly a century of Spanish history, following three generations of men whose lives are interconnected through love, desire, and loss.

The film is now receiving its first major marketing push, with the release of its initial posters that reveal more about its tone and visual style. The artwork features striking, almost painterly visuals, hinting at the emotional and historical depth of the story as it unfolds across generations. A teaser trailer is expected to follow soon, providing audiences with their first glimpse of the film’s footage.
At its heart, the narrative delves into themes of memory, love, and queer identity, focusing on three interconnected men whose lives are influenced by desire, suffering, and the legacies they inherit. This aligns with Calvo and Ambrossi’s intention to tell a story about freedom and legacy, honoring the generations whose bravery has paved the way for LGBTQ+ visibility today.
‘La Bola Negra’ comes with impressive credentials. The film tied for the Best Director award at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, was nominated for the Palme d’Or, and received a standing ovation lasting between 16 and 20 minutes during its world premiere in May. This acclaim quickly led to a competitive bidding war, with Netflix ultimately securing the U.S. distribution rights.
The cast reflects the film’s ambitious scope, featuring the acting debut of Spanish music artist Guitarricadelafuente alongside ‘Elite’ star Miguel Bernardeau, Carlos González, Milo Quifes, Lola Dueñas, and Julio Torres, with Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close in smaller yet impactful roles. Netflix has also committed to an unusually extended theatrical window for the release, granting ‘La Bola Negra’ 47 days of exclusive theatrical play, the longest in the streamer’s history, surpassing the 30-day window given to ‘Marriage Story’ in 2019.

This commitment highlights how seriously Netflix is taking the film’s potential during awards season. ‘La Bola Negra’ is set to open in U.S. theaters on October 16, with its streaming debut scheduled for December 2, following international theatrical releases in Spain and France around the same timeframe.
With critical acclaim already accumulating and a unique marketing strategy in place, ‘La Bola Negra’ is poised to be one of the most anticipated awards contenders of the season.
