Christopher Nolan has spent over two decades demonstrating that ambitious, star-driven filmmaking can still draw crowds, but this summer has been particularly remarkable. His latest film has spent weeks defying conventional blockbuster trends, maintaining audience engagement with a staying power that few modern tentpoles can match.

That film is ‘The Odyssey’, Nolan’s expansive, nearly three-hour adaptation of Homer’s ancient epic, featuring Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside a stellar cast that includes Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o, and Robert Pattinson. Shot entirely on IMAX film cameras and rated R, it seemed like an unconventional choice for a summer blockbuster, yet it has consistently exceeded expectations since its debut on July 17.

This momentum has propelled the film past one of its most symbolically significant milestones. According to Box Office Mojo data, ‘The Odyssey’ has surpassed 2012’s ‘The Avengers’ at the worldwide box office, amassing $1.553 billion globally compared to ‘The Avengers’ lifetime total of $1.521 billion. This achievement positions ‘The Odyssey’ as the fourteenth-highest-grossing film of all time worldwide, knocking off a movie that ranks as the seventh highest-grossing entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It is a rare accomplishment for a non-franchise, adult-oriented film to outpace one of the MCU’s foundational blockbusters, especially one that essentially launched the modern shared-universe model that Hollywood has pursued ever since. ‘The Odyssey’ has earned $564 million domestically and $989 million internationally, opening to $264.1 million worldwide, marking the biggest global opening of Nolan’s career and surpassing his previous record set by ‘The Dark Knight Rises’.

This MCU milestone adds to a series of achievements the film has already accumulated this summer. ‘The Odyssey’ recently surpassed Marvel’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time worldwide, and it is now officially Nolan’s highest-grossing release ever, overtaking both ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘The Dark Knight’. With over $7 billion in career grosses across his filmography, Nolan has firmly established himself as one of the most bankable filmmakers of his generation.

IMAX has played a crucial role in this success, contributing hundreds of millions in ticket sales and making ‘The Odyssey’ the highest-grossing release in that format, a distinction linked directly to its status as the first narrative feature shot entirely on IMAX film cameras. With 70mm IMAX screenings continuing to sell out in major markets into the fall, the film’s box office ascent shows no signs of slowing down.

Given how many MCU releases ‘The Odyssey’ has already surpassed on the all-time charts, and with strong legs still carrying it through additional international rollouts, it is likely to continue climbing past even more Marvel benchmarks before its theatrical run concludes. For a three-hour R-rated adaptation of a nearly 3,000-year-old poem, this is an almost unimaginable box office outcome.
