Vanessa Kirby has been on a remarkable journey in her career, transitioning from the grand narratives of Marvel to a more intimate ensemble project. After her role as Sue Storm in ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ and with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ on the horizon, she has dedicated much of this year to a unique and grounded endeavor.

That endeavor is ‘Liminal’, a sci-fi action-thriller from Apple Original Films directed by Louis Leterrier. The film features a star-studded cast, including Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Tom Pelphrey, Franka Potente, and Tracy Letts. Based on the AWA graphic novel ‘Telepaths’, it envisions a world where a significant portion of the population suddenly acquires telepathic abilities due to a global electromagnetic disturbance.

Kirby announced that production has officially concluded, sharing the news in a heartfelt Instagram post. She reflected on what she described as a beautiful and chaotic few months spent with co-stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Tom Pelphrey, expressing gratitude to Apple TV, Leterrier, and the New York crew for maintaining a joyful atmosphere during the demanding shooting schedule.

This intensity aligns with what Leterrier hinted at weeks prior. During a Q&A for his Netflix film ‘The Last House’, he mentioned that he had just filmed the final scene of ‘Liminal’. He described the project as “very interesting sci-fi” while confirming the impressive cast, as reported by ScreenRant.

The narrative of ‘Liminal’ revolves around newly telepathic Boston police officers who become targets of a faction led by a wrongfully convicted prisoner trying to navigate a world where their abilities make them vulnerable. The screenplay, penned by Justin Rhodes, known for ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’, complements Leterrier’s experience with action-heavy films like ‘Fast X’ and ‘Now You See Me’.

Since its announcement, the cast has expanded, with Paul Sparks and Ava Threat joining the previously confirmed lineup. Filming took place from May to August this year in locations across New York City and Morocco, which likely contributed to the physically demanding nature of the shoot that Kirby referenced in her wrap-up post about being upside down for extended periods.

With Leterrier confirming that ‘Liminal’ will be his next release following ‘The Last House’, excitement is building for how this ensemble will tackle a story centered on mass telepathy and institutional distrust. Although no official release date has been announced, the film is anticipated to premiere sometime in 2027.

With Kirby’s heartfelt message about wrapping up filming and Leterrier’s enthusiasm for the project’s intriguing sci-fi elements, ‘Liminal’ is poised to be a standout addition to Apple’s expanding collection of original films.
