‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Surpasses ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ to Claim Top 3 Spot
Sony and Marvel’s latest wall-crawling adventure has been breaking records throughout its theatrical run, and this past weekend was no exception. Five weekends after its release, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has maintained its position at the top of the domestic box office, showcasing a level of consistency that is rarely seen this far into a film’s release.
This impressive staying power has been largely driven by a surprisingly strong international performance, which continues to pull in significant numbers even as competing blockbusters like ‘The Odyssey’ vie for the same audience abroad. Week after week, industry analysts have been astonished by how gently the film’s grosses have declined compared to typical franchise sequels at this stage.
This resilience has led to a historic achievement in recent days. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has officially crossed the $2.3 billion mark worldwide, surpassing ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’s’ $2.33 billion lifetime total to become the third highest-grossing film of all time globally.
The film’s fifth overseas weekend alone generated a robust $44.5 million, reflecting only a 36.4% drop from the previous weekend, a significantly gentler decline compared to ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’s’ 48.1% dip or ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ steep 65.2% fall at the same point in their runs. This performance has pushed the film’s international total past $1.44 billion across 66 markets.
When combined with its $891.8 million domestic total and a reported net production budget of $225 million before marketing costs, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has now secured a global total of $2.33 billion. This figure already exceeds where both ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ were at the same point in their theatrical journeys.
The film’s rapid ascent on the all-time box office charts has been remarkable. Just a week after surpassing ‘Titanic’s’ lifetime gross, ‘Brand New Day’ has now also overtaken ‘Avatar: The Way of Water,’ officially claiming a place in cinema’s all-time top three, trailing only James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame.’
With its current trajectory, industry estimates suggest that the film could ultimately reach between $2.5 billion and $2.7 billion globally by the end of its theatrical run, a number that would firmly establish it among the biggest box office success stories in Hollywood history.

Domestically, the film is also approaching another significant milestone. With $891.8 million in North America, ‘Brand New Day’ is now close to ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ unadjusted domestic record of $936.7 million, a benchmark that has stood since 2015.
With Labor Day weekend still ahead, the film has a genuine opportunity to extend its domestic reign and boost its global total even further before new releases begin to compete in the fall. For Sony and Marvel, these numbers signify a full-circle moment, further solidifying Tom Holland’s Spider-Man as one of the most commercially successful franchises in modern cinema.
