Alex Cooper’s Reality TV Show ‘Love Overboard’ Canceled by Hulu After One Season
Alex Cooper has been broadening her horizons beyond her “Call Her Daddy” podcast, establishing a media company that spans various industries, including beverages and scripted television. However, not all of her ventures have succeeded, and her initial foray into unscripted TV has now officially ended.
The yacht-themed dating series marked a significant shift for Cooper when it debuted earlier this year, showcasing her first attempt at producing reality television rather than just audio content. Hosted by Gabby Windey, known from “The Bachelorette” and “The Traitors,” the show featured 22 singles vying for romantic connections and access to the luxury yacht’s amenities.
Unfortunately, Hulu has confirmed that ‘Love Overboard’ has been canceled after just one season. The nine-episode series premiered on March 26 but failed to create the same excitement as Hulu’s other unscripted successes like ‘The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives,’ ‘The Kardashians,’ and ‘Vanderpump Villa.’
Reports indicate that low viewership was a key factor in Hulu’s decision to cancel the series. By the end of the first season, contestants Gia Aldisert and Tim Demirjian emerged as the winning couple, earning a $100,000 trip around the world as their prize.
Produced under Cooper’s Unwell Productions alongside Jeff Jenkins Productions, in association with 3BMG and Walt Disney Television Alternative, the series also saw Cooper’s husband and business partner, Matt Kaplan, serve as an executive producer, along with Mina Lefevre and other producers from the partnering companies.
This cancellation comes during a challenging period for Cooper’s expanding Unwell empire. Her Unwell Beverage Co., launched less than two years ago, is reportedly shutting down, with production ceasing after a final batch of seasonal flavors.
Despite these challenges, Cooper’s relationship with Hulu remains strong. Since June, Unwell has announced over eight new shows and films in various stages of development, including a scripted series titled ‘You Deserve to Know,’ currently in development at Hulu and featuring ‘Vampire Diaries’ stars Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley.
Cooper’s ambitions in unscripted content continue elsewhere as well. Her dating game show with Harry Jowsey, ‘Let’s Marry Harry,’ recently premiered on Netflix, marking another venture into reality programming outside of Hulu. Additionally, she is expanding into digital content with ‘Unwell Winter Games’ on YouTube, with an ‘Unwell Summer Games’ installment set to launch on September 7.
The rapid growth of her company has faced scrutiny, highlighted by a Vanity Fair investigation in June that detailed allegations from current and former employees regarding a challenging work environment at Unwell. This adds complexity to Cooper’s efforts to expand her media company beyond her podcast success.
For now, ‘Love Overboard’ joins the list of streaming reality shows that struggled to maintain an audience despite being associated with a well-known name. Whether Cooper’s future TV projects will fare better remains uncertain, but her overall production slate shows no signs of slowing down.
