Gerard Butler’s action franchise has been expanding beyond its cinematic origins, finding new life on television with a series of spy thrillers set in the same explosive universe. The ‘Has Fallen‘ film series, known for its high-stakes government sieges and relentless action, has successfully transitioned to episodic storytelling.

This expansion continues with the franchise’s latest chapter, following the success of both ‘Paris Has Fallen’ and ‘Apollo Has Fallen,’ the initial two television installments that helped establish this new era on the small screen. Fans of the spy thriller genre have been eagerly anticipating the series’ next direction, and they now have answers.

StudioCanal has officially announced that the ‘Has Fallen’ television franchise is returning for a third season, titled ‘Shadow Has Fallen.’ Filming is currently underway in South Africa and the United Kingdom, marking a fresh geographic direction for the long-running series.

Ritu Arya and Tewfik Jallab are both returning from the previous two seasons, continuing their roles as fearless MI6 operative Zara Taylor and former French Secret Service agent Vincent Taleb, respectively. Their return maintains the emotional and narrative continuity of the series as it ventures into new territory.

Joining them in the new season are three notable cast additions. Iwan Rheon, known for his roles in ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Misfits,’ Brendan Coyle, recognizable from ‘Downton Abbey’ and ‘Hit Point,’ and Atandwa Kani, famous for his performances in ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,’ are all set to appear in season three, though full character details for these new arrivals have yet to be disclosed.

Series creator Howard Overman, who has written every installment of the franchise thus far, has also penned ‘Shadow Has Fallen,’ setting this chapter in southern Africa. According to Overman, the new season represents Taylor and Taleb’s most challenging and morally complex mission yet.

The official logline describes a prison bus ambushed in a sudden, brutal attack in Mozambique, where an unassuming British prisoner named Miles, portrayed by Rheon, is extracted by Vincent and Zara. This extraction reportedly triggers a chain reaction that threatens global infrastructure, world leaders, and the very foundations of government stability, setting up what promises to be the franchise’s most expansive storyline to date.

The decision to film in South Africa is significant for StudioCanal’s broader business strategy. Following the Canal+ Group’s acquisition of African pay-TV giant MultiChoice Group, ‘Shadow Has Fallen’ marks the second large-scale production the studio has brought to the region, closely following Bill Condon’s feature film ‘The Road Home,’ which recently wrapped filming with a cast that includes Cynthia Erivo, Guy Pearce, and John Legend.

StudioCanal has described ‘Shadow Has Fallen’ as the next chapter of its globally recognized franchise, emphasizing that the series will leverage South Africa’s world-class cast, crews, and creative talent to further showcase the country’s capabilities on the international production stage. Additional South African cast names are expected to be announced as production progresses.

Currently, no official release date has been set for ‘Shadow Has Fallen,’ as the season is deep in production across both South Africa and the UK. Given the franchise’s steady pace of roughly one season per year, fans can likely expect more details, including casting announcements and a premiere window, in the coming months.
