‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Achieves Box Office Milestone Not Seen Since ‘Titanic’
Superhero films often dominate the box office for a short time, quickly losing their number one position to the next big release. However, the summer of 2026 felt different when Tom Holland returned as Spider-Man.
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ premiered on July 31 and immediately began breaking records, achieving the largest domestic opening weekend ever and the second-fastest ascent to a billion dollars, trailing only ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ This impressive rollout stood out even among a franchise known for its record-breaking performances.
Now, this success has reached a remarkable milestone that hasn’t been seen in nearly 30 years. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has maintained its position at number one at the domestic box office for an entire month, becoming the first film to do so since ‘Titanic’ in 1997.
Holding the top spot for just one weekend is a significant achievement in today’s competitive release schedule, where new films debut almost every Friday. However, ‘Brand New Day’ has held its number one position for four consecutive weekends, a feat that has not been witnessed in decades.
During its fourth weekend, the film earned an additional $39 million domestically and $109 million globally, pushing its worldwide total past $2.2 billion. This consistent performance, rather than a sharp decline after an explosive opening, has allowed it to reach a benchmark set by James Cameron’s iconic film nearly 30 years ago.
‘Brand New Day’ has also leveraged this sustained success to climb the all-time global box office rankings, officially surpassing ‘Titanic’s total earnings to become the fourth highest-grossing film ever. Only ‘Avatar: The Way of Water,’ ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ and the original ‘Avatar’ now rank above it worldwide.
Much of this longevity can be attributed to a lack of significant competition willing to challenge Spider-Man directly during its run, combined with strong word of mouth that has kept the film’s momentum alive beyond its opening weekend. Director Destin Daniel Cretton’s portrayal of Peter Parker, who navigates a new threat without his usual support system, has resonated with audiences, maintaining steady ticket sales.

Holland’s performance has received consistent acclaim throughout the film’s run, alongside co-stars Zendaya, Sadie Sink, and Jon Bernthal. This combination of critical praise and box office success has helped ‘Brand New Day’ avoid the typical drop-off that even the biggest blockbusters often experience in their second month.
As ‘Ne Zha 2’ now stands as the next challenge for Spider-Man on the all-time chart, and with ‘Avengers: Endgame’ set for a theatrical re-release later this month ahead of ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ the box office landscape is about to become more competitive. Nevertheless, matching a record that has persisted since ‘Titanic’ solidifies ‘Brand New Day’ as one of the defining theatrical runs of the decade, regardless of future developments.
