‘GTA 6’ Extended Look Breaks Netflix Records, Surpassing All Movies on the Platform
Netflix has been on a quest to engage with the gaming community beyond its own mobile offerings, but nothing could have prepared audiences for the recent buzz surrounding ‘Grand Theft Auto VI.’ Rockstar’s highly anticipated release, which has been over a decade in the making, found an unexpected platform for its latest reveal, and the resulting numbers are capturing attention across both the gaming and entertainment sectors.
In a strategic move, Netflix partnered with Rockstar Games to exclusively showcase an extended look at ‘GTA 6’ gameplay, giving subscribers an early glimpse at footage that many expected would debut on YouTube. The special presentation lasted just over 26 minutes, providing an in-depth introduction to the game’s protagonists, Jason and Lucia, as they navigate the fictional state of Leonida.
This gamble proved to be incredibly fruitful. The ‘GTA 6’ extended look amassed an impressive 31.1 million views on Netflix, ranking number one in 87 out of the 93 countries tracked by the platform, and becoming the most-watched title on Netflix for the entire week.
What makes this figure even more remarkable is the brief exclusivity period Netflix had for the footage. The deal allowed the streamer just a six-hour window before Rockstar uploaded the same extended look to its YouTube channel, yet Netflix still managed to attract nearly double the audience that YouTube experienced during the same timeframe.
Netflix measures its viewership differently than YouTube, using a metric called Completed Viewing Equivalents, meaning one household watching the special twice counts as a single view. Even with this stricter counting method, the special outperformed major new Netflix originals released that week, including Robert De Niro’s thriller ‘The Whisper Man’ and the final season of ‘Outer Banks.’
Labeled on Netflix as an English-language film rather than a game or a trailer, the special’s success positions it among the platform’s top achievements of the year. While it didn’t make Netflix’s all-time top 10 list, industry analysts have noted that this outcome is a clear indication that Netflix can serve as a viable launchpad for significant gaming events, rather than just a venue for streaming shows and movies.
The extended look was captured directly from the PlayStation 5 version of the game, offering fans their first authentic insight into the gameplay mechanics set to be available at launch. The footage showcased a variety of scenarios, from drug deals to late-night drives, as well as the ability to switch between Jason and Lucia, providing a broader perspective on the systems players will explore once the game is released.
One particularly striking moment demonstrated the game’s ability to shift control between the two lead characters on command, suggesting gameplay possibilities that extend beyond how previous entries in the franchise managed dual protagonists. With anticipation for the full game building ahead of its release, this kind of detailed footage seems to have quenched a long-standing thirst among fans, translating into the record-breaking viewership numbers now emerging from Netflix.
With the monumental Netflix debut and millions more tuning in on YouTube, it’s evident that excitement for ‘GTA 6’ has reached an extraordinary level that few releases ever achieve.
