Christopher Nolan has built a reputation for creating films that audiences believe are worth the investment of time and money. This trust has translated into remarkable box office endurance for ‘The Odyssey,’ the director’s mythological epic that has spent weeks defying the typical decline curve that most summer blockbusters experience.

Since its release on July 17, where it opened with $123.5 million domestically, ‘The Odyssey’ has steadily climbed through Nolan’s filmography, first surpassing ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and then ‘The Dark Knight’ to become his highest-grossing film ever. Featuring Matt Damon as the Greek king Odysseus alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and Robert Pattinson, the film crossed the $1 billion mark globally after just three weeks, marking Nolan’s first film to achieve this since 2012’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises.’

Now, the film has reached a significant milestone that highlights its staying power rather than just its box office totals. ‘The Odyssey’ has achieved 47 consecutive days above $1 million at the domestic box office, surpassing ‘Barbie’s’ previous 46-day streak, making it the sixth-longest such run at the U.S. box office since the pandemic began.

This sustained daily earning power was evident during the film’s seventh Tuesday discount day, where it garnered an impressive $2.2 million, reflecting only a 25.7% drop from the previous week despite losing 474 theaters. This figure marks the highest seventh Tuesday gross for any R-rated film, surpassing ‘Obsession’s’ $1.7 million on the same metric.

This also marks the highest seventh Tuesday in Nolan’s entire directing career, surpassing ‘The Dark Knight’s’ $619,000 performance at the same point in its run, and the highest seventh Tuesday for any July release, exceeding ‘Barbie’s’ $901,000 mark. These comparisons are significant because Tuesday discount performances are often seen as indicators of genuine audience-driven momentum rather than just opening-weekend excitement.

With its domestic total currently at $568 million, ‘The Odyssey’ is on track to surpass ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s’ $574.9 million total by Friday, making it Universal’s second-highest-grossing film ever domestically, following only ‘Jurassic World.’

What’s particularly striking about the film’s trajectory is how quickly expectations have changed. Just two weeks ago, a $600 million domestic total seemed like a realistic ceiling for the film. Now, that figure is viewed as a floor, with industry projections estimating a final domestic run between $610 million and $630 million.

This upward revision reflects just how extraordinary ‘The Odyssey’s’ endurance has been for a nearly three-hour, R-rated adaptation of a 3,000-year-old poem, defying typical expectations for what an “adult-skewing” epic can achieve commercially. With ‘Michael’s’ box office total now within reach, ‘The Odyssey’ shows no signs of slowing down.
