Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey Confirmed as Lead in Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ Reboot
Marvel Studios has been hinting at the arrival of mutants in the main MCU timeline for years, teasing fans with post-credits scenes and cameos without fully committing to a dedicated project. This year marked the end of that wait as the studio began assembling a new generation of X-Men under a fresh creative team.
Sadie Sink made her debut as Jean Grey in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ earlier this year. In that film, Jean Grey initially serves as an antagonist to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, her psychic powers spiraling out of control after her sister is captured by the Department of Damage Control.
This introduction has now been confirmed as the starting point for Marvel’s rebooted ‘X-Men’ film, with Sink set to lead the movie as its central character. Jean Grey, a founding member of the X-Men in Marvel Comics, will anchor the story as director Jake Schreier develops this new mutant team for the next era of the MCU.
The full cast for the untitled ‘X-Men’ project was officially revealed at Disney’s D23 event, confirming Sink alongside Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm, and Adam Driver as the villainous Mister Sinister. The film is set to release on May 5, 2028, coinciding with the MCU’s 20th anniversary.
Marvel seems to be intentionally building this iteration of the team around younger actors, positioning Jean Grey as a foundational element for the franchise’s future rather than simply reintroducing an established team. Sink has expressed her thoughts on this creative direction, stating to Entertainment Weekly that it felt like a “smart choice” to begin the franchise with a younger generation of mutants who haven’t yet formed the team audiences recognize from the comics.
Interestingly, the MCU’s version of Jean Grey has been reimagined without prior ties to Professor X or the broader mutant community, marking a deliberate shift from her comic book origins as one of Xavier’s earliest students. This approach allows Schreier and his team the freedom to develop her relationship with the X-Men from the ground up on screen.
Sink is already shaping her understanding of the character as production approaches, sharing insights from early discussions with Schreier about Jean’s future arc. She highlighted that the X-Men’s appeal lies in their “incredibly flawed” nature, noting that they may have made mistakes, according to Variety.
She further explained that Jean’s ongoing struggle with her powers will remain central to her growth as a hero, adding that this understanding “makes her really well-rounded,” according to Variety. This perspective aligns closely with how ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ depicted Jean, intertwining her power and pain rather than portraying her as a straightforward antagonist.
With Jean Grey’s backstory partially established through ‘Brand New Day’ and the wider X-Men cast now confirmed, excitement is building for how Schreier will introduce Marvel’s mutants into the next chapter of the MCU. Filming is anticipated to begin in 2027 ahead of the film’s 2028 release date.
