Andrew Garfield Addresses His Spider-Man Return Rumors for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Multiverse speculation has become a staple in modern superhero fandom, with each new Marvel project igniting fresh theories about potential surprise appearances. Few actors have been at the center of this speculation as frequently as Andrew Garfield, whose Spider-Man made a memorable comeback in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home.’
That 2021 appearance rekindled fan affection for Garfield’s portrayal of Peter Parker, a role he previously played in 2012’s ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ and its 2014 sequel. Since then, any hint of a significant multiversal Marvel event has sent fans on a quest for clues about whether Garfield might don the mask once more.
With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ on the horizon as one of the most anticipated crossover events in franchise history, speculation has surged again. Garfield has now addressed the rumors directly, clearly stating that he will not be reprising his role as Spider-Man for the film.
At the premiere of his historical action drama ‘The Uprising’ at the DGA in West Hollywood, Garfield made his stance clear when asked about his involvement in ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ Despite his firm denial, he left just enough ambiguity to keep fans intrigued about what might unfold when the film is finally released.
“You’ll find out I suppose, one way or another,” Garfield said, according to Variety. This kind of playful ambiguity has become a hallmark for actors navigating the notoriously secretive atmosphere surrounding major Marvel releases, and it’s unlikely to quell the rumors entirely.
Garfield’s comments come amid a broader wave of inquiries regarding the film’s ensemble, as Marvel Studios continues to keep most casting details tightly under wraps ahead of the movie’s release. With Robert Downey Jr. set to lead as Doctor Doom, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has already generated significant anticipation, regardless of which legacy characters may make an appearance.
This isn’t the first time Garfield has publicly denied involvement in a major Marvel project, only for those denials to later prove misleading. Ahead of ‘No Way Home’s’ release, Garfield famously and repeatedly denied any knowledge of the film, statements that turned out to be carefully orchestrated misdirection meant to protect the movie’s biggest surprise.
That history has understandably made fans skeptical of any outright denial from Garfield regarding future Marvel appearances, even when he insists there’s nothing more to the story this time. Whether his latest comments will hold true or be retracted closer to the film’s release remains to be seen.
In addition to the ongoing Garfield speculation, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ continues to generate buzz through other unconfirmed casting rumors, including recent teases involving Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s Deadpool and Wolverine potentially being part of the story. A teaser shown at D23 featured Jackman humorously appealing to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige to include the characters, further fueling fan theories about the film’s scope.
For now, Marvel Studios has yet to confirm the complete cast list for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ as the film moves toward its eventual release. Fans will have to wait and see whether Garfield’s denial stands, or if his Spider-Man will make a return to the multiverse once again.
